My wife and I recently visited Oslo, Norway, to attend a wedding. After that, we stopped in Stockholm and Copenhagen. The wedding was of course the main event, but one thing that really sticks in my mind was our visit to the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. The Museum’s main attraction is a single, unique exhibit: the salvaged and restored wreckage of the Vasa, a 64-gun Swedish warship that sank in Stockholm harbour in 1628. The ship was 1,300 meters from shore and less than two hours into her maiden voyage when she hit bottom in 32 meters of water. The Vasa is the world’s only preserved 17th century sailing vessel. After initial attempts at salvage failed, the Vasa lay under water for 333 years, until she was salvaged in 1961. She was remarkably well-preserved, since the cold and salinity of the Baltic Sea kept it free of the worms that would otherwise have infested and destroyed the Vasa’s wooden hull.
