ADOBE SYSTEMS INC. $96.70

ADOBE SYSTEMS INC. $96.70 (Nasdaq symbol ADBE; TSINetwork Rating: Average) (408-536-6000; www.adobe.com; Shares outstanding: 500.2 million; Market cap: $48.0 billion; No dividends paid) makes software that lets computer users create, edit and share documents in the popular PDF format. Graphic designers also use its programs to create print publications and web pages.

In its fiscal 2016 first quarter, ended March 4, 2016, Adobe earned $0.66 a share. That’s up 50.0% from $0.44 a year earlier. Revenue jumped 24.7%, to a record $1.38 billion from $1.11 billion.

Adobe’s shift toward subscriptions and away from selling software as a one-time purchase continues: it now gets 81% of its revenue from recurring sources.

In the latest quarter, the company added 798,000 Creative Cloud subscribers (net of cancellations). This service now has around 7 million users. Adobe is also seeing strong demand for its newer cloud-based offerings, including Document Cloud. That lets users create, manage and sign online documents for a monthly fee. Revenue from its Marketing Cloud service, which helps advertisers make their online ads more effective, jumped 21.1% in the latest quarter.

The company continues to spend a high 17% of its revenue on research. That helps it compete in a rapidly changing industry. However, the stock has gained 25% in the past year and now trades at an expensive 34.5 times the $2.80 a share Adobe will likely earn for all of fiscal 2016. Moreover, Adobe gets 40% of its revenue from outside the U.S., and the high U.S. dollar is hurting the contribution of its overseas businesses.

Adobe is still a hold.
