The bank’s U.S. operations spurred earnings in the latest quarter, thanks in part to the acquisition of a key transportation-financing business.
BANK OF MONTREAL (Toronto symbol BMO; www.bmo.com) is starting to see the benefits of its recent restructuring, which included closing branches and expanding its online and mobile banking operations.
In its fiscal 2016 third quarter, which ended July 31, 2016, Bank of Montreal’s revenue rose 7.2%, to $4.9 billion from $4.6 billion a year earlier. It earned $1.3 billion. That’s up 5.3% from $1.2 billion. Due to more shares outstanding, earnings per share rose 4.3%, to $1.94 from $1.86.
Earnings from Canadian retail banking (41% of the total) rose 0.9%. Loan demand from consumers and businesses remained strong. That offset higher loan-loss provisions to cover future bad loans.

The U.S. retail banking division (20%) saw its profits jump 24.8%. That was due to Bank of Montreal’s recent acquisition of General Electric’s transportation-financing operation. That business lends money to commercial truck and trailer manufacturers in the U.S. and Canada. It also offers loans to dealers and buyers.
Value Stocks: Higher trading volumes lift earnings
Earnings at the bank’s capital markets operations (24%) gained 18.0% on higher trading volumes. However, earnings from its wealth management business (15%) fell 4.3%. That was due to lower stock market values and the sale of some smaller businesses.
Bank of Montreal’s loan-loss provisions jumped 60.6% in the quarter, to $257 million from $160 million a year earlier. The increase was largely because the bank set aside more funds to cover any loans to oil and gas producers that default.
The bank has paid dividends each year since 1829. The current annual rate of $3.44 a share yields 4.0%. The stock trades at 11.7 times its likely fiscal 2016 earnings of $7.26 a share.
