In April 2017, the company raised its dividend by 2.0%. The new annual rate of $2.04 a share yields 2.9%. Wal-Mart has now increased that annual rate each year since it began paying a dividend in 1974. The company continues to invest heavily in its stores and Internet businesses. It has also increased the pay of its U.S. workers. Due to these extra costs, earnings in its fiscal 2017 fourth quarter, ended January 31, 2017, fell 17.9%, to $3.8 billion from $4.6 billion a year earlier. Earnings per share declined 14.7%, to $1.22 from $1.43, on fewer shares outstanding. Overall sales rose 1.0%, to $130.9 billion from $129.7 billion.
