CALIAN GROUP LTD., $26.45, Toronto symbol CGY, has two main operations: Business and Technology Services (supplying 70% of the company’s revenue) provides clients with engineers, health-care workers and other skilled professionals on a contract basis; and Systems Engineering (30% of revenue) sells hardware and software for testing, operating and managing satellite and other communication systems. The company last raised its quarterly dividend by 7.7%, with the September 2012 payment. Calian investors receive $0.28 a share, up from $0.26. The annual rate of $1.12 yields a high 4.2%. The company continues its expansion in to a new area—emergency response preparedness training. Calian’s latest acquisition is International Safety Research Inc. (ISR) of Ottawa. ISR has been in business for almost 20 years, providing that preparedness training to both government and private-sector customers. It also supplies radiation and nuclear-safety engineering services.
