BLACKBERRY LTD., $9.05, Toronto symbol BB, won contracts this week from the U.S. government to secure its communications services. The agreements include a five-year deal to provide emergency wireless services to the U.S. Capitol complex—the Congress, White House and Pentagon. The U.S. Coast Guard has also expanded its deal with BlackBerry to provide staff in Washington D.C. with secure communication services. The company has called the contracts “multimillion-dollar” deals, although it has yet to disclose exact numbers. BlackBerry is also planning to launch two new phones in the next few months. They’re powered by Google’s Android software, and their success is key to making the company’s smartphone business profitable again. The stock will likely remain depressed until that turnaround.
