WAL-MART STORES INC., $78.63, New York symbol WMT, is the world’s largest retailer, with 11,652 locations in 28 countries. In response to strong competition from online retailer Amazon.com, Wal-Mart has formed a new alliance with Internet search engine Google, a division of ALPHABET INC., Nasdaq symbols GOOG (class C non-voting), $915.89, and GOOGL (class A voting), $930.50. In 2016, Google launched its Google Home voice-activated smart speaker. By speaking into it, users can play music, set alarms and turn off lights. Through the Google Express home shopping system, users can also use the device to verbally order products from a variety of retailers, including Costco and Target. This week, Wal-Mart agreed to sell its goods through Google Express. As well, Google Express has dropped its annual $95 membership fee. Instead, users avoid having to pay shipping charges as long as their order exceeds a certain amount. Wal-Mart will also give them the option of picking up their purchase at a nearby store.
