Reduced spending on advertising led to a 2.8% revenue drop for this company during the most-recent quarter.
However, high-speed Internet expansion and upgrade plans point to higher revenue and cash flow ahead.

BCE INC. (Symbol BCE on Toronto; www.bce.ca) is Canada’s largest traditional telephone service provider.
As of December 31, 2020, BCE’s Wireline division had 2.48 million residential customers in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and the Atlantic provinces. It also had 3.70 million high-speed Internet users and 2.74 million TV subscribers (including Internet-TV and satellite customers).

In 2020, Wireline accounted for 52% of BCE’s total revenue and 55% of its earnings.
The Wireless division sells wireless services to 10.22 million users across Canada. This business supplied 38% of BCE’s 2020 revenue and earnings.
The remaining 10% of revenue and 7% of earnings came from BCE’s Media division. It owns CTV Television, 24 specialty channels, four pay-TV services and 109 radio stations.
BCE’s revenue rose 10.3%, from $21.72 billion in 2016 to $23.96 billion in 2019.
However, revenue fell 4.5% to $22.88 billion in 2020. Due to COVID-19, businesses are cutting their advertising spending, which is why revenue at the company’s Media operations dropped 14.5%. As well, revenue at the Wireless business fell 3.5% as travel restrictions cut into the wireless roaming fees BCE collects from cellphone customers. However, the revenue at the Wireline business declined at a slower pace of 0.9%, as strong demand for Internet services offset slower sales of products and services to businesses.
BCE’s earnings before unusual items gained 0.8%, from $3.01 billion in 2016 to $3.03 billion in 2017. However, due to the extra shares outstanding because of its acquisition of Manitoba Telecom, earnings per share declined 2.0%, from $3.46 to $3.39.
Earnings then gained 4.0% to $3.15 billion (or $3.51 a share) in 2018; they were largely flat at $3.15 billion (or $3.50 a share) in 2019. Earnings then fell to $2.73 billion ($3.02 a share) in 2020, mainly due to COVID-19’s impact on revenue.
In the quarter ended December 31, 2020, BCE’s revenue fell 2.8%, to $6.10 billion from $6.28 billion a year earlier. That missed the consensus forecast of $6.16 billion.
Earnings before unusual items fell 6.8%, to $731 million from $784 million. Due to fewer shares outstanding, per-share earnings declined at a slower pace of 5.8%, to $0.81 from $0.86. Even so, that still beat the consensus estimate of $0.74.
Blue Chip Stocks: Plans include 5G and other high-speed Internet service upgrades
BCE plans to spur its post-pandemic growth with new investments in its high-speed Internet and wireless services.
In 2021, the company plans to spend $4.7 billion on expanding and upgrading its networks. That’s up 11.7% from $4.2 billion in 2020.
The increase is because BCE plans to spend an extra $1 billion to $1.2 billion over the next two years building out its fibre-optic network and ultrafast 5G wireless infrastructure. The company will fund these outlays using the $1.04 billion it received from last year’s sale of its datacenter business to U.S.-based Equinix Inc.
BCE is also investing heavily in its new 5G (fifth-generation) wireless networks. They are up to 100 times faster than current 4G (or LTE) networks. That speed allows for much faster video and data transfers and helps BCE attract new subscribers. 5G will also prompt existing users to upgrade their smartphones.
Despite the higher investments in its Internet and 5G networks, BCE expects its free cash flow (regular cash flow minus capital expenditures) to improve this year to between $3.55 billion and $3.90 billion, from $3.35 billion in 2020.
Thanks to that strong cash flow, BCE raised its quarterly dividend by 5.1% starting with the April 2021 payment. Investors now receive $0.875 a share instead of $0.8325. The new annual rate of $3.50 yields a high 6.0%. The company has now increased the annual dividend rate each year since 2008.
Thanks for the feedback. In the past few years, BCE and Telus have invested large sums on upgrades to their wireless and high-speed Internet networks. These big projects are now coming to an end, which will free up more cash for dividends. Their 5G networks in particular should spur revenue and earnings for years to come.
