Please tell me what you think about this YouTube video

As you probably know, we take a keen interest in U.S. stocks, so we are always interested in U.S. politics.

Our interest is especially intense today, since U.S. voters will go to the polls this November to choose a new President.

For many months, I have been reading about the controversy surrounding Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server during her time as U.S. Secretary of State. It’s a complex subject.

This past week, I saw a 1:47 minute video entitled, “Hillary Clinton vs. James Comey: Email Scandal Supercut.”

The video neatly summarizes Hillary Clinton’s view on the issue, and contrasts it with the FBI’s official view.

I’m writing to ask you take a look at the video, and share your view of it with me and the rest of the world, via our comments section below. Please be sure to login first.

I’m so interested in your views that I will read every one of them, and send a free advance copy of my upcoming book, “Pat McKeough’s Successful Investor Toolkit” to the top 10 responders.

Thanks and all the best,

I find it disturbing that she is so cavalier in dismissing the possibility that restricted/classified material was sent from her personal email server, which suggests to me she is temperamentally unfit for the office of president of the United States.

  • Aym

I think that very soon we will see a formal resignation from Hillary Clinton given that she will not be able to escape the fallout from the email scandal. In her place I would expect that Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren will run as the Democratic pair. Hillary really has no choice but to permanently leave public office or face prison time. I also think that Donald Trump will resign his place as the Republican nominee and quite possibly Paul Ryan will take his place. Just my thoughts based on things I’ve read.

  • Daljinder

With due respect to Hillary as being a first lady and Secretary of State, it is hard to believe that Hillary can lie with a poker face – no emotions. For a candidate that is hoping to be president, telling lies is a dangerous business. Lie enough times and the country would stop believing you. Telling untrue statements regarding classified information is not a recipe of success – anywhere. Even your friends would be tired of defending you for next 5 months…

  • Walter

Hillary, as a politician, has no choice but to
Deny her obvious poor judgement — not criminal BUT dangerous and disappointing. Power corrupts without fail and produces the illusion of infallibility. It’s is most unfortunate that the American voters are left with so few options in chosing leaders. The angry populist backlash will sadly, but understandably, continue to grow in the modern western world.

  • Robert

Hillary Clinton is unfit to be President, and probably should be in jail. While Trump is a narcissist, Clinton’s sense of entitlement and willingness to lie, cheat, and do anything else to win makes Trump seem like

shrinking violet. She clearly will do and say anything to win. As A Republican, I hope that Trump will not be nominated and I am not sure if I would vote for him, voting for Clinton is inconceivable; I probably will not vote for President.

  • Ted

Well, I guess the smirk on her face at the end of the video clip tells it all. Essentially, In her mind she didn’t do anything wrong, so inspite of what the investigators found – she is thumbing her nose at them. This is a case of where she believes she is above the law and frankly why don’t you minions just leave me alone and I will do what I want. For SHAME

    Ted

  • Ron

Hillary is like every other politician. Their words are twisted and do not tell the truth. Telling the truth would hurt their chances of being elected. It is for these reasons that many Americans and Canadians do not trust their politicians any longer and are willing to vote for a change hoping the new candidate will be more honest.

  • Dennis

I am not sure what to think. If she is lying why is there not being something done about it? It would be disgraceful to have a president that lies. If someone is making this all up then they should be charged. I do not know what to believe. 30000 emails what could they be about?

  • Lalit

I feel like I am watching the end of an empire. Growing up the US was held up as a shining example of hope, justice and progress across the globe. Somewhere either they lost it or I became too jaded.

The US citizens have a tough time this go round. Neither of the two candidates (Clinton or Trump) inspire confidence however, in Clinton we have a known commodity. I am sure if enough investigations were done, an equal or more amount of dirt can be brought up on Trump too. Unless someone else steps up in this race, forced to choose between these two, I would choose Clinton.

  • Dale

Obviously caught in a web of lies. The American people have a dilemma on there hands they’ll have to pick between a liar and an idiot!

  • Tom

Well, as with just about anything on the internet today, it is very easy to find completely opposite opinions on just about any subject or any product review. In addition, video clips can be relatively easily manipulated to use sound bites out of context and create a very different view than the person was trying to convey.
Having said that, it is certainly troublesome if everything stated by James Comey is true. If it is, then US citizens are faced, in November, with choosing the lesser of 2 evils, unless the Republicans pull a rabbit out of the hat and actually put forward a different candidate than the current front runner.
James Comey’s closing statement is the most troubling as it implies that the same actions taken by an ordinary US citizen would have resulted in a different outcome. So, presidential candidates are above the law??

  • Maria

Seldom, if ever, one has the courage to admit wrongdoing… this is part of the overriding survival human instinct. In this case, examination of the facts is applied from two different vantage points. Neither Ms. Clinton nor Mr. Comey deliberately mislead the court of public opinion and both are guilty of using the English language superbly to obfuscate. The upcoming election for President of the biggest and most powerful economy in the World presents the electorate with poor choices, but on balance Ms. Clinton is the better choice, in spite of her warts. Thank you for the opportunity to give my opinion and for the chance to read your book. Sincerely, Maria Robinson

  • Kim

It is so irritating that a public official in a position like that can get away with so much. Even worse there are so many supporters of hers that just seem to be completely asleep. Its hard to believe anything in politics these days.

  • Harry

I find it difficult to believe Ms Clinton’s explanation, I don’t think that she deliberately breached protocol but did without checking or verifying any possible breach.

  • David

There is no doubt in my mind that she is lying. The Clinton’s have always received special treatment. She should never hold the office of the President, however, Mr. Trump is not a viable option either. Out of the two, I would prefer Hillary which in my opinion would be another 4 years of Obama.

  • Andre

If only Madoff had been the Treasury Secretary while running his Ponzi scheme, he wouldn’t have another 140 years to sit in prison. This is not to suggest that a person in similar circumstances and activities would face no consequences. “Poor” Comey and his intellectual waterboarding…

  • It is difficult to comment on this video because all the facts were not presented in the FBI directors comments. You need to listened to the Congressional meeting with Comeny in order to form an opinion. I took away from the Congressional meeting that there were only 3 E-mails that were consider classified and these are now discover to be marked improperly. I believe what Clinton said to her best ability did not knowingly send classified E-mails. This does not let Clinton of the hook she did violate protocol by having her server at home. A slap on the wrist and move on. These comments are from a Canadian, therefore I do not represent any US party

  • Normand

it is obvious that lying is a way of life for her, as it is for most politicians I would argue. I recall PM Jean Chrétien denying he had made the pre election promise of disolving NAFTA after being shown the news clip where he uttered those very words… These people manipulate the message (aka lie) for a living… It’s become a normal part of their livelihood. As citizens it’s becoming increasingly difficult to decide who’s most credible and trustworthy especially when lying has become this blattant and ubiquitous. I don’t see Trump as any more trustworthy than Clinton, as I find his propositions down right frightening… In conclusion, I’m not impressed with the USA’s current election prospects. Mind you, Canada’s PM prospects in the Chrétien-Harper era were not brilliant either and we managed to get through it all. I imagine they will as well. Hopefully the US economy will keep on churning smoothly through it all, which is what we, as investors, yearn for.

  • Stuart

    Dear Pat,
It is quite obvious from viewing the two statements that Mrs Clinton is doing what politicians do best, misleading the electorate with lies. It is another sad reflection on the lack of honest politicians, if ever such a creature existed. However, if I were an American voter I would have to hold my nose and vote for her, because the alternative is unthinkable! My career in law enforcement showed me the darker side of mankind but also that there are decent people in society-if only we could persuade them to go into politics.

  • Dave

Can any reasonable person viewing this come to any other conclusion than that either Mrs Clinton or James Comey is lying? Obviously one of them is fabricating their version of the facts. Mrs. Clinton, by virtue of this matter, is not suited for the presidency.

  • Gerd

This video is proof that Hillary is following in hubby Bill’s (Teflon Willy’s) footsteps. The “Big State” has chosen her to reign to continue the Beltway’s power, corruption, wealth and privileges.
She has absolutely no interest to abide by the 10th Amendment.

  • Marcel

Of all the possible comments one could make, one thing is absolutely true, not one atom of doubt is possible: one of them is lying.

  • Jim

Deny, deny, deny. Ms. Clinton is hoping that following this mantra will see her through the email/security scandal (which Mr. Trump and the Republican Party will certainly make hay with) and on to the presidency. It really comes down to a question of the trust American voters have for Ms. Clinton to be given the keys to the Whitehouse, even without any charges being laid as a result of the investigation. Remember the lesson of Martha Stewart – she did’t go to jail for insider trading (could have plead guilty to an indiscretion and paid a fine), she was imprisoned for lying about it. Far better to admit a mistake and preserve one’s integrity in my view, but that’s apparently not how US politics works.

  • Khalil

Hillary sounded a tad like her husband when he denied the Lewinsky incident. As with most things US, the world will never know the whole truth.

  • David

The two addresses are chopped up to suggest a conversation, which never existed. The video has no merit.

  • Garth

According to the FBI, there was extreme “carelessness” and a misuse of email that may have led to dangerous security breaches. But they will not charge Hilary Clinton, although if anyone else does the same thing, the FBI will bring criminal charges against them. The bottom line: Hillary Clinton is above the law, even the FBI laws.

  • Robert

In any normal election, with normal alternative candidates, this would be a show-stopper – just as John Edwards’ extra-marital affair and campaign finance violations ended his run for the presidency. But the 2016 campaign is not normal. Americans are forced to choose between a corrupt, mentally imbalanced candidate and a corrupt, mentally balanced one. In the end I expect they will hold their nose and vote for Clinton.

  • Andrew

Concerned. It is unfortunate that she let it get to this, which is concerning. It is also unfortunate that she gets favouritism, which is concerning. I am also concerned that many Americans are aware and concerned about this but feel helpless because it is part of the “system”. It is also disconcerting that Americans showed a strong vote toward anti system/establishment (Barry and Donald), not that I think they were wrong, but more that both parties ended up there at the same time, which is concerning. In summary, Boooo to Hilary, she knows better, but more Boooo to the politicians for getting into such gridlock to make the voters unhappy (the last 8 years are a travesty for both parties). I am concerned about the general concern “Joe or Jane” America has about their parties.

  • Hilary

I feel Hilary Clinton lied about the emails plus the amount of servers she used. Is this the future President of the United States. I read the State Dept are starting to look into Hilary’s emails. Not much choice for President of the U.S.

  • Bob

I just can’t believe that the FBI dropped all charges. Would their ruling have been different if she was not the Democrats choice for the Presidency. Who knows. It is simply another example of the power of politicians and the connections and influence they have. Expediency is a poor excuse for the stupidity displayed as U. S. Secretary of State. I am not envious of the American electorates choice to make in November.

  • Chris

Why worry about either Clinton or Trump? US system is different that ours. Congress and Senate with their bi-partisan politics can stymie any President as evidenced by Obama. All you can count on is a fall with extreme market volatility driven by what will probably be the dirtiest campaign in history. At the end of the day, both will “Nixon” out. I would be more worried about our own Canadian politicians who are not fiscally responsible, do questionable fund raising and who are picking our pockets with taxes to save the climate, when in the end, very little of that collected money will drive anything but waste.

  • Ward

A politician who ‘s “slant” on their actions don’t jive with an investigating authority. What, don’t trust a politician?? Uh huh…..

  • T. H.

Listen, all this would seem like a storm in a teacup if you prefer to let Mr. Diarrhea Mouth into the White House; talk about lies………Mr DM has already done so blatantly. You ever heard of “the lesser of 2 evils” ??

  • George

Donald Trump will use this video (except for the end with Comey saying Clinton won’t be charged) for an election ad. To think a nation of 330,000,000 people has these two folks as their two choices for president in 2016 is mind boggling.
    George M

  • Arthur

Firstly I retired from the Canadian Forces after 44 years full time service. Everything is considered classified. Such as “Restricted”, “Confidential”, “Secret”, “Top Secrect” and Higher. The first two designations are automatic and really are of a personal matter and would not harm National Security. The video leans to a Republican view of things and not to the Democratic view. Trump or Hillary, who really cares!!! Either is a good choice but I am sure the Trump if elected would be his same of self where if those advising her disagree would hear the famous Trump statement “YOUR FIRED”. Imagine “FOUR YEARS TO ELECTED A LEADER”, in itself tells me that the U.S. should not be a world leader in anything. Good thing they have an Army as they can’t even see the automatic weapons are not a weapon needed by the public.

  • Tom

I do not trust Hillary Clinton…in my opinion, she has always put her obligations aside to further her self interest!

  • Jim

Hillary is really trying to dodge this and Comey is telling what really happened. Comey makes comment that “To be clear this is not to suggest that in similar circumstances a person who engaged in activity would face no consequences.”

  • Robert

This clip does not help Mrs. Clinton at all. The video clip presents Director Comey as a neutral and expert judge of very complicated matters and relies on common societal values that respect and honour statements made by officers of the law. We all know that there are valid and legitimate questions that can be raised about police evidence as shown in countless trials. Mrs. Clinton has every right to have different interpretations of every message. I believe she was careless and I expect there were breaches. However, I understand previous Secretaries of State have used private servers/email accounts and I have read that foreign governments have hacked State Department servers for years now so I believe no damage has been done. I agree with Maria Robinson that better Mrs. Clinton than any other candidate. I hope you give us an opportunity to share our thoughts with you and each other again.

  • J. Brian

Hilary Clinton is more than a liar. I fail to understand first why she has not been penalized for the obvious breaches of security. Her past statements on this issue have been seriously untruthful not only to the public but to her government in a number of serious inquiries. I fail to understand how anyone can believe that Hilary Clinton is the better of a bad lot. Trust is a virtue that outlweighs a lot of other failings. Hilary for President is a very bad idea.

  • Robert

Mrs. Clinton has been lying about this E-mail fiasco since day 1. There are somewhere between 1 to 3 thousand E-mails missing which she assures the American Public were personal such as family photos, recipes, chats with her daughter etc. etc. However, these E-mails were erased by a team of her lawyers and computer specialists to ensure they never saw the light of day again which seems to be overkill if they were indeed innocent or trivial. From what the FBI said, these folks did their work well. The support for Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders comes from people of diverse views being fed up with the US Political System and trying to support an outsider to that system. The decision not to prosecute Mrs Clinton, who is the ULTIMATE POLITICAL INSIDER, just reinforces the impression that there are different rules for the Political elite and for the rest of the American people. Bob H

  • Edward

I think that it is appalling. I do not trust Ms. Clinton and I believe that she is lying in her statements about her E-mail use. However the republican alternative, Trump, is by equal measure a laughable buffoon and simply terrifying. If he is elected he will at best simply bankrupt the American economy but he will certainly cause racial hatred and violence in America and will likely instigate disastrous warfare internationally.

  • Peter

The very best case is that Hillary Clinton showed an extremely lack of judgement. The worst case is that she was deliberately tried to circumvent standard government security practices for her own purpose. In either case it calls into question her credibility to be President of the United States of America. Unfortunately of the candidates that have been nominated by the Republican and Democratic, she has to be the better choice. What a tragedy.

  • Mark

The old saying “there is no honor among thieves” certainly applies here. This is not a case of twisting the truth , but outright lies. Can you imagine the powerful USA with a choice of two of the most disliked people as candidates for the presidency. We can easily see that this candidate will lie at any given opportunity. At least she learned one thing from her hubby Bill…….” I did not have sex with this woman” was an answer of convenience that got him off the hook. And it appears that it has done the same for Hillary as the FBI suggests that no criminal charges should be laid. It appears that the citizens of the US will accept this type of behaviour from people running for the highest office in the country. They know that she is an out and out liar but will probably still elect her as President. Tells us a lot about the most powerful country on the planet. Maybe they should rethink their system and start anew with a short campaign as we have in Canada….they still have four months to come up with new candidates.

  • Sidney

Hillary Clinton’s denial sounds the same as Pres Bill Clinton’s denial when caught with his pants down and he said something like “I did not have sex with that woman”. Neither have any credibility!

  • J. Brian

Mr Comey the FBI chief looked very uncomfortable in delivering his statement on the Clinton e-mail issue. His statement on the issues not being sufficient to warrant criminal charges sounded like a personal opinion and not a legal opinion. When asked if being untruthful in a congressional inquiry was a criminal act. He stated that it was. It seems to me that we may not have seen the last of this issue if Congress is of a mind to connect the dots between the e-mails and Hilary’s appearances at a number of inquiries. The Libyan inquiry which is ongoing comes to mind for me. Perhaps, there are others.

  • Thomas

Well Pat, Mrs Clinton by her own admission is in violation of the rules as they apply to her elected office, it seems to me that Mr Comey’ lacks the courage of his convictions, and is side stepping his responsibilities as the FBI director.
Truly unnerving personal characteristics for “folks” in such powerful positions.

  • Blaine

I think it is quite obvious that the Presidential candidate believes she is immune to scrutiny. She & her handlers believe she is above the law, and more worrisome; they are probably right. I sympathize with James Comey, he was likely given an ultimatum and chose to embarrass himself.

  • Joe

She thought that she was above the law and when she got caught … well … I think she tried to find a way out. I don’t believe her. …and Mr. Comey… I think that if instead of Mrs. Clinton was someone else he would have charged her.

  • Blaine

Dennis; it would be amazing to have an elected official that didn’t lie. Social Media exposes the most callous parts of our political system by showing what people say when they don’t know they are being recorded. Case in point; mayor Nenshi talking about UBER in an american cab.

  • Tom

I think Hillary is a crook. Using a personal email server showed extremely poor judgement. Not to even admit any wrong doing shows her arrogance. She was the Schittecatte of the Lybia invasion. It was ill conceived and there was no transition plan. It is now a failed state and close to a civil way. Obama said this was his biggest regret. Hillary was driving this and convinced Obama even though he was skeptical. When asked about it she said that Obama was the one who initiated it. No admission of any responsibility. Thus shows her arrogance. I don’t think she deserves to be President. Unfortunately she is the lesser of two evils. We won’t even talk about the arms deals and the money funnelled to her foundation.

  • Lorne

Hillary made choices based on the knowledge that she had. Her experiences in office gave her credibility and knowledge which she applied to make judgement calls in her position. I think the main reason this has become an issue is because it is an election year and the republicans need to have something to make her look bad.

  • Edward

I’ve known about what the Clintons jointly ‘pulled off’ in their various scams before Bill Clinton became President. Hillary Clinton doesn’t want to talk about how she was responsible for Benghazi (ask the dependents of those that were killed). She has lied about so many things that it would take quite a few pages, which now an US author has turned into a book (Armageddon, I believe). She represents the Deep State, has been bought and paid for by a number of corporations (including TD), made over $100 million on her ‘speaking engagements.’ It would appear that her husband (and probably her) were involved in influencing the Attorney General of the US to not prosecute re security breaches. Any ordinary person that did even 10% of the mishandling that she has done with papers that were to be secure, were given jail time & significant fines, but it appears that she may be above the regulations regarding security. There may be some hope yet that the State Department will continue on with its suspended investigation, but I’ll believe that when I see it.

Always keep in mind what one of the Roosevelts said: in effect, the business of the US Government is business. Right now the largest corporations have so much control that very soon Unitedstatesians will soon no longer have food labels that tell consumers about GMOs – the very subject that the EU relates to being carcinogenic.

  • Jagdish

This is a very strange situation, the US Secretary of State used personal e-mail server to communicate with other Government Departments and no body raised a flag when this was going on. There is so much security around corporate computer usage and I would add that US Government Computer networks would use even tighter security measures. If Mrs. Clinton was able to use her personal email server, then the communication would have to be of non-sensitive nature. Still the question is why was this allowed to happen and why was she not warned about it. More and more of such controversies are bound to surface during the next several months and Americans will have to decide who and what to believe. We Canadians can only discuss these issues as outsiders but will not be able to influence the outcome.

  • Sid

I find this very disturbing as it feeds into the perception of mistrust of Hillary. This plays directly intoTrumps hands, which in my view is a total disaster. Disturbing as the video is, I am not sure of the context. Were e-mails labelled classified or later determined to be classified. How have other officials in this time frame treated emails and other media. Is the FBI director a Republican, playing into the political fray, I hope not? Not sure how Hillary can come clean, on the issue.

  • Henrik

I continue to be amazed at how ostensibly intelligent individuals fail to realize the real damage is caused by not the original act but rather the subsequent denial. HRC have that in common with Martha Stewart who, recall, was imprisoned for perjury, not the act for which she perjured herself. While HRC was not under oath, she has significantly undermined her credibility when that was entirely avoidable. All that being said, without criminal charges she will be the Democratic nominee and more than a few will pinch their noses and vote for her simply by virtue of her being the least alarming option.

  • David

I was in the US a few weeks ago. It’s really hard for people to talk politics there without ending up in an argument because the candidates are so polarizing. On balance, despite sharing her husband’s ability to gloss over problems, I think Ms Clinton would at least steer a less uncertain course with the US. Trump is a wildcard, and anything could happen. But I’m not sure how successful either of them would be at dealing with the senate.
NDP in Alberta, liberal majority in Canada, brexit in the uk, and the US election coming up: the electorate seems to be changing. We do live in fascinating times.

  • Darryll

This reminds me of the joke, “how do you know when a politician is lying?” Answer: Their lips are moving! I have no confidence in politicians at any level of government in the U.S. Or

This reminds me of the joke, “How do you know when a politician is lying?” Answer: Their lips are moving! I have no confidence in any level of government in the U.S. or Canada, it always becomes a position of power and greed naturally follows, it is simply the human condition to take advantage of their personal power and work to improve their (life, finances, position), take your pick. I don’t blame or condemn any of them, my point is I don’t believe or trust any of them, and if the masses vote or hope for a politician to improve their life, then they are doomed to be continually disappointed. Sorry for the negativity, but sometimes the truth isn’t pretty.

  • Estate Of Rolf

Tempest in a teapot. Her IT support staff looked after all that stuff. She probably had no idea what server her e-mails were on. This is just politics.

  • Bruce

In many years of competent service at very high levels of government, if this is the worst that the GOP can throw at her, I’m not very upset about it.
I know people who work in government and pursue very personal matters and even a private lawsuit on their government e-mail accounts. Lawyers communicate with their clients in criminal trials with plaintext emails. Many people just don’t think much about email security.
I’m more upset about Edward Snowden’s information showing how so much unencrypted email traffic is intercepted by national security agencies and we still don’t bother to encrypt our own emails.
There are now two choices for US President and we have one competent thoughtful woman and one fellow I can’t describe in words for public consumption. The US public doesn’t get to choose someone else who in their opinion is flawless. I think Hillary is the clear choice at this point.

  • Estate Of Nigel

The Donkeys have a calculating ass. The Elephants have a temperamental bully. What a choice! I’d rather be kicked than trampled; more chance of survival!

  • Andrew

As a global observer of events surrounding Hilary Clinton, and indeed, the presented video “Hillary Clinton vs. James Comey: Email Scandal Supercut.”, I was disappointed to see a Federal agency arrive at the conclusion it did.
Coming to the TSI’s interest in this result, I have to consider how it might affect the economy and eventually, the stock markets. I can only offer my humble analysis and conjecture:
The Markets will perhaps react positively to the news because it shows that status quo, establishment, and major political and personal powers in the USA are not to be meddled with in the face of the evolution of the American political and economic system.

I would also defer to the Terms of Use and avoid any personal comments directed at any public or private individual and remember this is an investment interest group.

  • Craig

Let’s not forget what happened during Hilary Clinton’s time as Secretary of State. Ambassador Stevens was killed in Libya. Did emails on that unsecured server end up in hostile hands? Did that tip off some bad actors about Ambassador Stevens whereabouts in Libya?
If Hilary Clinton wasn’t aware about the security of email she is completely incompetent and unfit for office. The Secretary of State would have access to Top Secret information which would probably include intercepted emails. I don’t think Hilary Clinton is incompetent there was likely information on her private email server that she did not want to be subject to freedom information requests. We will likely never know if information obtained from those emails resulted in the death of Ambassador Stevens.
If this issue ends up costing the Democrats the presidency, it is there own fault for not treating the issue more seriously during the primaries.

  • Mike

Comey, when questioned about the FBI Investigation of Hillary’s e-mail fiasco categorically stated that she had lied on all the issues over and over again but then calmly decided that he is recommending no action against her which is not his position to do as he is required to simply put forth the results of his investigation, to the Attorney General! Comey’s reasons were that she did not show intent to harm and that she did not have enough knowledge about electronic equipment. However intent is not required under the law! It seems to me that Comey fell into the same reasoning that Justice Robert’s ruling a few years ago on Obamacare which seems to be based on not wanting to be responsible for recalling such a major issue. The case for Comey regarding Clinton falls in the same category. The Republicans have tow more chances one being if the investigation for the Clinton Foundation proves the blatant lies and acceptance of huge speaking fees for favors and the Congress submitting a request for a ruling on the fact that Hillary lied under oath when she made a deposition in Congress regarding her e-mails! Hopefully it will take place before the election in November!

  • Tom

The United States government is entirely corrupted and has been for some time. The free press and the strength, honesty and respect that American people have for the sacrifices that their forefathers made in order to secure freedom from past tyranny is the last bastion of hope for their great nation. Unfortunately, the press has bowed to the will of the very elitists that are leading their nation to ruin. If the American people cannot free themselves from the treasonous manipulation of The Council on Foreign Relation, Goldman Sachs and secret societies like Skull and Bones I fear that her days are numbered. I realize that if freedom succumbs to these criminal elements in the United States mankind will be doomed to repeat the savagery of history. I pray that the people PAY ATTENTION and WAKE UP before this oligarchy gains full control. The Brexit results were uplifting. The cowardice of the U.S. press combined with the negligence of the average American citizen, however, is a grievous insult to their forefathers. The crimes of Nixon are surpassed on a weekly basis but Woodward, Bernstein and Deep Throat have all been bought out along with most of the U.S. government. You asked……

  • Both Clinton and Trump are scary candidates for Presidency. Heaven help the USA and the rest of the world if either one becomes the next President.

  • Peter

I believe one of Arizona’s (Republican) senators, who is no friend of Donald Trump or Hilary Clinton described the current choice of presidential candidates as “a dumpster fire”. That sums it up very nicely. She’s irresponsible and arrogant, he’s arrogant and irresponsible…she ought to have been dropped like a stone over this, and though the news media is not widely reporting it, he’s is being sued for sexual assault. Could it get worse? Yes, one of them will be elected.

  • Vera

Whether she lied or not, does not seem to be the question. For me, the question is more about judgement. Surely the people a least deserve a President that shows good judgement with a smidgen of honesty thrown in. What kind of judgement is shown by someone who in this day and age is oblivious to hacking and who doesn’t demand the highest security of their e-mail available to them?

  • Bill

This video with it’s goofy background music is obviously meant to discredit Clinton. There’s not enough here to bring on her resignation or any criminal charges. It will fire up Donald Trump and many of his supporters, who will raise his theme that she can’t be trusted, a theme coming from a man who totally lacks credibility and trust himself.

  • Fred

I have not been following American politics very closely, so am not up to speed on the issue, other than the FBI said she did not do anything wrong.
There are two reasons to use a personal e-mail. One is convenience, although I would think that her official e-mail would be equally convenient – except when she is in a location that is external to the State Department’s system and it requires a complicated and time consuming procedure to remotely log into the system. One would think the IT people could make her remote log in as painless as possible. The second is that the e-mails from her private e-mail are not stored on the State Department’s server. Some executives in big companies have gone to jail because what they thought were private e-mails were in fact retrievable from the company server after many months or years – everything generally gets archived to tape or other permanent media. When that happened there was lots of media publicity which Hillary had to be aware of. So the question is was she using a private e-mail to avoid having the message recorded on the State Department’s server, and why would she do that. From the little I know and the video above, this question was not raised. It is troubling that Hillary would do this and it is also troubling that the question was not raised by the FBI.
Unfortunately she and her husband have been at the centre of a lot of controversy, some of which they set themselves up for, which Hillary again did this time, and some of which was just plain witch hunting by the Republicans. So Hillary backers will say this is one more example of unjust persecution and Hillary haters will say it is one more example of why she cannot be trusted. The question can also be raised that did the FBI simply avoid the issue by clearing Hillary or did they do a thorough investigation to establish beyond any reasonable doubt that there was no indictable crime? As another commenter pointed out this is a decision for the Justice Department and not the FBI. I suppose the Justice Department could still review it, although I expect they would not welcome this hot potato. I also expect the issue of her bad judgement, and her possible desire to maintain some messages secret, will come up in the presidential election.

  • Craig

Hillary Clinton is a liar – not just about email/server details – but about a plethora of subjects – and she is a criminal. It’s a total mystery to me how any American could consider her to be presidential material. What a fraud!

  • Richard

Sad but typical for this government. I wonder if the CIA would have laid charges on HC if she wasn’t a presidential candidate in the upcoming election! It’s who you are and who you know. I don’t see a suitable candidate running for the big guy’s job at this time (on either side of the house).

  • Ronald

I WOULD NOT BUY A USED CAR FROM HILORY CLINTON. As President, not on my ballot, If I were a U. S. citizen.

  • Adrian

I find it incredible that the security at Capital Hill did not know or if they did they did nothing.
Comey should have as a minimum issue a hefty fine confirming a bad judgement call on Hilary.
Both Clintons are escape artist. They are beyond the law or so they think. If Hilary is the Next president i hope we don’t go through another impeachment.
I do believe she will make a good president and hope Trump is a distant last.

  • Rob

Hillary either doesn’t understand what happened (at the time of the emails) or else she just went ahead and did it anyway because she is Hillary Clinton. It is curious as to why the FBI did not proceed with charges against her and is in fact disturbing. What is going to happen if she occupies the highest office in the US and she behaves in such a high handed manner? She will not even own up to this situation even if it was a mistake on her part.

  • Jackie

As Harry Truman looks down upon the latest presidential buffoonery, tears must be cascading down his cheeks.

  • Jean-guy

I believe Hillary is in a serious situation but let’s not forget american $$$$$$$ will see her through.

  • Bill

Not true, there is no suggestion of a conversation. The two sets of statements are juxtaposed to show the discrepancies between the two parties’ statements. One of them is undoubtedly lying. Which one?? Well, who has the most to lose by telling the truth, and to gain by blatantly lying?

  • All American politicians just lie. There is no accountability the accuracy of what they say. It’s just about the sound bite, which gullible people buy. The media is also guilty for their lack of editorial content in reviewing the content for accuracy. Hillary may be bad, but Donald Trump is worse. He lies on a daily basis.

  • James

IMO, the best source for information on the 20 year relationship between Comey and the Clintons can be found at the Investment Research Dynamics website. Dave Kranzler’s 3 posts between July 7th and 8th articulately outline the criminal cover provided by Comey during his tenure at the FBI, DOJ and SEC.

  • Edward

As a dual US/Canadian citizen living in Canada, I see only one candidate fit to be President of my adopted country and it certainly is not Donald Trump. I will be voting for Hillary, as will my wife Betty, because of Hillary’s lifelong record of service to our country, to women, to the poor and the needy as well as her years of service as Senator from New York state and Secretary of State. Hillary Clinton has served our country well all her life, and I know she will serve it well as President.

  • Edward

The facts are that it is possible that certain sensitive information could have been compromised but if any of the matters contained in the e-mails were of significant information, this would have been disclosed since the authorities while not seeing any criminal acts, clearly thought the actions were not in the best interests of the USA. That being said, it is also clear that previous incumbents also used similar sites in a similar manner, and therefore no one should be condemned for actions which may have been acceptable at the time they were done, in spite of current custom. I am only glad that I will not have to make any decision in November since there seems to be no good choice.

    Ted H

  • Neil F.

Wow, she has taken a page firmly out of Bill Clinton’s early day denials about questionable matters with an intern at the White House. The presentation, conviction and mannerisms are stikeingly similar, albeit a different matter. The truth behind the denials eventually catches up with one no matter what high level or ivory tower perch they occupy. This video makes me sick and I am sure most people will feel the same. It is a shameful performance and a disgrace that the world can clearly see.

  • Carol

Hillary Clinton used bad judgement in using her personal e-mail on a private server during her time as Secretary of State. Her campaign statements are typical of political spin used by most candidates when forced to respond to such errors. It appears that she has been fortunate enough that there is no evidence that a hacker used any information to the detriment of the USA (that appears to be why no charges were laid). Many people are guilty of poor judgement in how they handle their on-line activities. It is disturbing that she went the private server route for her personal life (understandable) but failed to keep it separate from her Secretary of State role (not so understandable).

  • Stewart

Really not a whole lot to be said. James Comey came to the conclusion that if it was not Hillary Clinton charges would be pending. The Bengazi incident alone should ensure that happens!!

  • Harold

God help the US and the rest of the world if she is elected the US President!! She IS a CONGENITAL LIAR of the highest order, as this video clearly shows. As funny as this video is, it is terrifing to think she and Bill could be back in the White House. The Clinton Foundation is NOTHING but a money gathering front for their personnel enrichment. During her tenure as Sec of State, she traded US Gov’t favours that she facilitated, for payments to Bill, under the guise of speaking engagement retainers (i.e., pay-offs). I have NO DOUBT that they have a long list of backmailable info on a host of Washington officials/individuals that is used to keep people in line, including the media. Trump is right to say she may be the most corrupt canidate to ever run for US President. Trump has his own issues but he is nowhere as bad as Hilary Clinton.

  • Ron

Another piece of work from Reason TV backed by the Reason Foundation and more likely than not funded by Koch brothers and other “1” percenters.

  • Graham

This is the state of politics in the world today. It’s interesting reading the comments, how we can fool ourselves. I imagine Hillary will be elected and things will continue as they are. The markets will probably like that better than a Trump win. The changes that will take place in our societies over the next few years will shake us to the core. Remember to read the best advice from people like Patrick and, invest, invest, invest. Look after your own interests and ignore all the background noise from the politics of the day.

  • Don And Gwen

From past experience and discussions with others, the use of calling something classified is way overused. And when something truly classified was exchanged the email server would not have been used. But she should have known better and this action would not recommend one for a promotion.
Her reaction to the questions raised have yet to be properly addressed, and fits the pattern that Clinton will set her own rules. The clips chosen were maybe more extreme than necessary.
So our American friends must choose between two unqualified potential leaders. Clinton looks like the least worst.

  • John H

This is a great example as to why the electorate no longer respects or trust politicians and is a good reason why Trump is doing so well. Very sad!!!

  • Gabrielle

The video is hardly unbiased, everything from the editing to the background music suggests a bias and the source Reason.com clearly has its own agenda. Having said that this whole ‘issue’ has always seemed strange to me. It seems very unlikely that Ms Clinton has enough technical knowledge to know where specific messages were being stored or how they were handled. The bigger mystery for me is why her office felt the need to use a separate email server at all, seems unlikely to be for a reason as simple/risky as some have suggested.

  • John

Though this appears to be significant, and undoubtedly, by some measures, there have been mistakes and/or misjudgements made, this seems to be a bit of a red herring. An awful lot of attention being paid to this (and many other) mishaps, misjudgements and errors of relatively small significance. In my opinion, there are far too many, far more important issues for politicians, and media to be focusing on.

  • Raymond

The addiction for power in its worst form unfortunately means that no transgression or breach of ethics, legality and honesty is too great to consider and undertake if the reason is to become US President. Hilary is a major disappointment and has no trustworthiness left. Her reputation is in a shambles – it’s not because of the email scandal alone but rather a seemingly endless trail of borderline behaviour and encounters with the law that indicate this is chronic behaviour rather than a single misjudgement. Nonetheless this does not deter me from looking at America as a great country and a great place to do business and to find great investments.

  • Paul

I am glad I am not an American today. The terrible events that have happened in the last few days are very scary and sad. The process that the Americans go through every 4 years to elect a President takes far too long and clearly doesn’t work. For the parties to come up with Trump and Hillary as “leaders” of the free world makes me nauseous. The US is in deep trouble. Neither of the 2 candidates should be elected

  • David

It is unfortunate that a person who can mislead the public with such a straight face, will likely end up as the next president of the United States, since the Trump alternative seems much scarier.

  • Bruce

I don’t know who to believe, or what to believe. It disappoints me, and frustrates me, that politicians are so skilled at lying and either downplaying or over dramatizing issues. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have these important positions of public service filled with selfless people of integrity. Alas, I fantasize.

  • Pierre

In the video, Comey talks of 110 emails which were deemed classified when sent or received. We don’t know the rank of the classification. At the end of the video when Comey talks of Clinton’s carelessness, he states “very sensitive highly classified” , now was he referring to the 110 emails? or was he speculating. Clearly if the emails were highly sensitive and classified Mrs Clinton should be charged. The source documents are always marked with their respective classification. My opinion, we have a put-up job by Mr Comey to suit the situation (Political corruption) and on the otherhand Mrs Clinton must be lying
on some of her remarks (political corruption).
I’m sorry to see the USA go down the road of political corruption displayed everywhere. Supreme Court decisions…. Racial violence…. Gun Laws….. Interpretation of the Amendment 2….. Election manipulation….. an impotent congress….. I better stop now. To one of the most friendly countries in the World filled with millions of good-hearted folks: When you vote, choose carefully by particularly looking at the candidate that will do the best for your Country, not for the best that it will do for individuals or to whatever group an individual may belong.

  • John

The smile on her face at the end of the clip says it all. She knows she is above the law & can do anything she wishes. There are different rules and laws for the people compared to politicians.
James Comey’s closing statement is the most troubling as it implies that the same actions taken by an ordinary US citizen would have resulted in a different outcome. So, presidential candidates are above the law??

  • Leo

She is obviously someone who cannot discern what is truth. I really feel sorry for our American neighbor to have to chose between these two….mind you in the past those who have taken a strong position on certain issues, such as Trump has, have tempered their actual actions once they got into office and had some proper briefings on issues.

  • Raphael

Clearly, Hillary Clinton behaved recklessly and irresponsibly in using her personal email account as US Secretary of State. As well, she either lied about or was carelessly not aware of the contents of certain emails and the possible ramifications of her actions. Donald Trump is also a reckless and irresponsible liar, as well as a life-long con man and a pathological narcissist. The two of them are the most despised public figures in America. Neither is fit to be President of the United States, especially during the growing civil war in that country that is manifesting on numerous fronts. Even though his comments were tongue-in-cheek, I have to agree with the Daily Show’s new host, Trevor Noah, that the best solution would be to call off the election, and keep Barak Obama in the job until both major parties are able to field credible candidates for president.

  • Monte

A liar just like the rest of them. If she was a civilian not a politician she would be charged as guilty.

  • Roy A

As I listen to this FBI mouthpiece I am reminded of the people who informed Bush about the “weapons of mass destruction” that Saddam supposedly had in Iraq. EVERYTHING in the USA is political, including all the government agencies.

On the other hand it seems to me that most politicians will say whatever they think will get them or keep them in office. Whether it is absolute truth, partial truth or outright lie.

The major thought I have about the American election is who is going to be the least damaging to the country, Trump or Clinton? And consequently the least damaging to Canada….

  • Pierre

Hilary Clinton is deceitful and does not deserve to be trusted with the functions of the presidency of the U.S.A.

  • Guy

Well if I would have to choose between the better of two evels. On this gauge Hillary would be better than Donald. Is this the beginning of the fall of the American empire?

  • Graham

I’m so glad I am not an American voter. To have to choose between a very capable liar and a bombastic half-wit is not a choice I would relish. Even putting the best of both candidates in one person would still not produce a winner. Nevertheless, for everyone’s sake, I hope she wins!

  • Colin

The Lady seems incapable of telling the truth. The amazing part is that so many Americans are willing to overlook the many obfuscations emanating from this woman and vote for her. It is disconcerting to say the least. I am also disappointed in Comey as there have been others who have been guilty of the very same transgressions without the obvious leniency accorded Ms. Clinton. It does not speal well of the American justice system.

  • Catherine

I think I am disappointed that TSI is choosing this as a topic when investment information should be the focus of its platform. You have a presence and influence which can only be undermined by this kind of display. The damaging partisan rhetoric doesn’t need more venues in which to proliferate.

  • John

Such convolution! The power of cut and paste and selective clipping and pairing to confound viewers into a state of fence sitting and awe. Without all of the facts and information, and surely much has not been released, no intelligent person can make a determined opinion as to which side to support. It’s incredibly concerning that that the general public are being asked to be swayed by such fabricated videos and the like that present important issues in such a sensational manner. But, this is the new world; and the truth can be so easily muddled with strategic use of techno/legal language and media tools. Impartiality seems to have succumbed to these new methods.

  • Russ

Sounds like a “he said- she said”, with nobody able to tell anything for sure without outright taking one side or the other at face value, which in US politics is not always the best way of handling things. However, it is interesting that the investigation could not reach a prosecutorial conclusion even though the FBI has capabilities of tracking down and retrieving emails and other communications that we can only speculate on.

  • R W

It is absolutely disgusting how many lies people in important positions feed their subjects lies. PolitFact, a Pulitzer Prize winning organization dedicated to fact checking, recently fact checked has found Hillary lies 27 percent of the time, while Donald Trump on 77 statements checked lies 76 percent of the time. I feel sorry for the American people, they have a choice between a lier and a super liar. What a choice. Hilary does however seem to be the most capable of leading the American people.

  • Milton

I watched a quite a number of highly respected lawyers from both sides and certainly the majority expressed opinions and judgements on this issue and found that Hillary certainly given prefermental treatment. From my uneducated legal opinion I certainly would not trust her with any of my serious business.

  • Lynne

What we are seeing here on Hilary’s part is the arrogance born of power. Disturbing to say the least! Having said that, I don’t believe for a minute that there was any intent on her part to put her Country at risk by violating information security protocol. Somewhere in here support system she was badly advised after possibly voicing some frustration with some percieved inconvienences imposed by this protocol which led to her setting up her own e-mail server. Like the rest of us Hiliary is human and relied on many other people to carry out her function as Secretary of State. I would peronally like to see another person as the democratic candidate however, even on her worst day Hilary would be a better president than Trump.

  • Frank

Secretary Clinton and her staff personnel responsible for this huge mess, took this matter very casual while carrying out her official duties as Secretary of State. She is still in a state of denial as she faces the electorate who will have to decide whether to believe her or not. As far as I am concerned she is a professional liar.

  • Kenneth

Just sadness that the Americans don’t have better choices. Clinton is beholden to the unions which will make life difficult for business. As an artful dodger, business, and the people of America should beware.

  • William L

What a choice for the American voters! Margaret Wente’s column in July 9 Globe paints a very jaundiced picture of Hillary.

  • Tzvi

Firstly, I am a Canadian citizen but since Hillary Clinton represents one of the great powers of the world, I believe we are all affected. She is a liar, and she learned how to be a good liar from her husband who also lied in the past. I do not believe that she can be trusted. I remember her saying that when they left the White House they were broke. Then how did they accumulate millions in such a short time in their so called “foundation?” It seems to me that the American System has many systems depending who you are and sign me off.

  • R Alan

Hillary has been clearly caught in multiple lies by the F.B.I. The choice of private email accounts was clearly intentional and probably with the intent to be able to erase any incriminating evidence that would not be possible on a government server. Comey clearly was under pressure to avoid charges, probably from Obama. Even Comey’s last sentence that others should not expect to avoid charges shows the pressure. Generals and whistleblowers have been charged in similar, but lesser, events.

  • Henry

While excerpts from any discussion can be misinterpreted or play into the hands of those intent on putting a twist on otherwise factual commentary, this is not the first time Ms. Clinton has been untruthful. The history of the USA as being the most stable economic place to do business on the globe is being tested beyond comprehension and is worrisome to all. The fact that the American people are so disenchanted with politicians of all stripes is likewise worrisome and make some fearful of financial markets. Ms. Clinton will prevail but her views will not be helpful to investors with our only hope that her advisors are all of sane minds and body….maybe her spouse can help the cause. She is the lessor of two evils as Trump is downright scary.

  • Bill

I find it scary the number of people that appear to be able to form any kind of opinion based on a collection of juxtaposed and out of context sound bytes. Politicians can never admit wrong doing of any kind because of the insane level of public judgement and resulting fallout. Its such a shame that in politics one can’t just say “I made a mistake” and we all move on – as is often the case in the real world.

As many have already noted it is often a case of electing the lesser of two evils and for me that is clearly Hillary. The idea of cowboy Trump with his finger on the button is beyond scary.

  • John

This is the usual case to cutting and patching different comments. It is made to look as if the 2 people are commenting about the other person’s speech but they are not. Cute music in the background makes it seem like a cartoon of some sort. In my mind this has very little validity since they are not addressing the issues head to head.

  • Andrew

It’s a good thing that I took my high blood pressure medication because otherwise it’d be off the charts after watching the video clip. The sad truth is that given the alternative, American voters will likely hold their collective noses and vote for Hillary Clinton. Here’s hoping that she’ll end up being a one term wonder.

  • David

The US election will ultimately come down to a choice between Hillary and Donald. Opponents of Hillary naturally focus on the ostensible email scandal and Bengazi allegations and Donald’s portrayal of “Crooked Hillary”. Supporters of Hillary don’t care that much about these matters and see them as exaggerated partisan attacks. Opponents of Donald focus on his US- Mexico wall (paid for by the Mexicans no less) , ban on Muslims entering the US, opposition to trade agreements including NAFTA and general unusual demeanor for a potential US President (blowhard, ego maniac, nasty, etc.). Clearly, these are not the two best possible candidates but one of them will be the next US President (if it is Hillary , all that so-called “lying” about the e-mails wont have mattered in the end). We will see who wins in a few months.

  • Yilap

They are both telling the truth, to a certain extent. I am not sure about the motive of the author, to have some fun, to express his/her convoluted view, to grab attention to see how viewers react to the video or something else. As Pat said this is a very complex matter, and my take is any opinion formed based on the video plays into the hands of the author.

Comey did the right thing IMHO. This is overtime in game seven of the Stanley Cup final, barring any true violation, the referee lets the players play a fair game to determine the outcome. Think of the savings in time, lawyers’ fees and aggravation on both sides. Did Hilary get preferential treatment? I would say no.

  • Donald

If your interest in U.S. politics makes you a supporter of Trump then keep it up.
If your interest in U.S. includes supporting Trump then keep it up. Clinton is not perfect but the FBI did not charge her. Read the column in the Globe & Mail on the difference between the two candidates.

  • Constance

I think Hillary believes she is telling the truth about her e-mails however her actions were very careless and arrogant. If she were an ordinary citizen I suspect she would be charged as ignoring security rules is taken very seriously by all governments. Her actions and the response to them is disturbing, as is also the response by the Republicans to what should be a fair, informed and legal opinion by an unbiased FBI.

  • Louis

I am disappointed in Hilary Clinton’s failure to come through with a clear honest statement about her use of private servers. I think if she had come out early on and issued an honest statement this issue would have been much reduced by now. I think it’s worth noting that several other individuals in high office have used private servers in the past and no issue has been made of these. Most notable among these was Colin Powell while he was Secretary of State. However, the republicans have brushed that aside as not being very important.
Mrs. Clinton has been the target of an unrelenting assault from the republican party since around 1995 when they were infuriated by her unsuccessful attempt to introduce universal healthcare in the US. Since then she has been the target of a smear campaign that would have destroyed a weaker person.
As a resident of the US, I don’t think that her use of a private servers is really all that important. The US has a wide and inconsistent use of the confidential classification regarding documents. For instance, all the documents that Edward Snowden stole and were since published on the internet are still “classified” and US government employees have been warned that they must still be treated as such. Does that make any sense?
With regard to lying politicians, there is a long list. Ronald Regan on Iran-Contra, Bill Clinton regarding Monica Lewinski are clear examples, yet both of these presidents left office with very high approval ratings largely because they oversaw periods of strong economic growth. Both of them could probably have been elected for a 3rd term if the law permitted.
In the greater scheme of things I think Hilary made two mistakes. The first was in using the private servers and the second one was not fessing up and stating clearly that she had made a mistake. If she gets elected and governs over a period of strong economic growth history suggests that she will go down in history as a hero and this will be regarded as a bump in the road.

  • Pat, I am quite surprised that you would utilize a partisan video (Libertarian) that plays circus clown music in the background to have people make comments on a political issue. The facts that are presented in the video are sound bites and do not illustrate all of the facts in the case. I am not sure I understand your motives here!

  • Frank

Any president can be controlled in the US and even impeached. If a leader in Canada goes rogue there is little the people can do. I am a registered Republican and feel confident that either one of these poor choices will not harm the American people or the rest of the world.

  • Arnold

I don’t get it Pat. Are you just trying to get us all to post comments on your website, and using this controversial video to do so? Or do you really want comments on the video? I think the video is a waste of time. I’m tired of hearing about the email “scandal”. It’s not a scandal. The Republicans were all excited when the FBI got involved and said they trusted to FBI to get to the bottom of it. But then the FBI investigated and they say there is no case. Now the Republicans have changed their tune. why can’t they drop it? is this fake-scandal the best they can do? they are going to need a lot more than that to overcome the Trump-handicap they’re carrying.

  • Peter

Its a taxpayer funded witch hunt and this issue is a distraction to much more important issues. I believe Clinton was careless but that if there were significant leaks that really compromised the country’s security there would be more substantive allegations. Corrective actions have taken place. Move on.

  • Owen

This is a very cold and calculating woman who could never have reached the level of power she has if she was careless. All her acts whether it was the involvement with the Benghazi debacle or this secret/private email server are meant to serve one purpose; her advancement in the political spectrum to gain power. She has very powerful allies, such as her husband, who coincidently had a private meeting with the attorney general prior to the announcement by the FBI director. I find it telling that it is the FBI who made the pronouncement of her innocence when that is not their job. The FBI, like all other law enforcement agencies, are supposed to gather evidence then present it to the attorney general who then decides whether this should be persude in court. Besides that the reason given for Clinton’s innocence was, ” She intended no harm.” It’s wonderful how in her case she didn’t mean to break the law so it is ok. Edward Snowden broke the law and is now a wanted criminal and he warned the people of all the western nations that our governments are spying on us. Not quite the same, I know, but there is irony there. Intent is not a distinguishing factor of whether or not a person is guilty according to the law. It is the act that makes a person guilty.
At the end of the day the American people will have to decide whether they not this woman, who is either careless and unprofessional, or a sociopath as demonstrated by her ability to lie with such casual ease, to lead their country. I am glad I don’t have to vote in November.

  • David

As Gore Vidal said, all politicians lie, even when they don’t have to. Mr. Trump has also been, as they say, “economical with the truth.” I think the salient point in the context of Pat’s question would be which presidential candidate would be better for the U.S. stock market and, by extension, global markets. I would be most interested in hearing Pat’s perspective on this.

  • Jackie

The video is obviously made to expose maximum contrast, as the media does for maximum entertainment value. Looking beyond this and assuming that both are at the top of their jobs, my impression is that politicians are liars and that something fishy with the emails did occur. However, the most frustrating part of this whole video comes at the end, when Mr Comey indicates that the decision not to prosecute Ms Clinton may not extend to others in similar situation. This to me indicates that there is a law, but it applies differently to different people. Whether it is because Ms Clinton is a presumptive candidate against Mr Trump or a 1percenter with special privileges almost does not matter; it indicates the rule of law is broken and that should be a worry to everyone.

  • Bruce

    Pat,
You’re asking a group of — I assume — mostly Canadians, who know little about the intricacies of the American political system (e.g. how many of us can clearly explain the electoral college system?), to give our opinion on a highly controversial matter, based on a 1:47 sound bite? Get real!
To put this in a context dear to you, what would you think of someone who recommended buying XYZ stock on the basis of that kind of information?

  • Karl

This is a tough one. It is easy to jump on a bandwagon and dismiss Hilary as another lying politician. However, we are talking about 30,000 e-mails. The Reason TV (apparently Republican biased) clip highlights that 110 emails (ca .36% of the total) were determined by the “owning agency” to contain classified information “at the time” they were sent. Were they marked as such? Did Hillary, who by the way looked like a mess during most of her tenure as Secretary of State (was she overwhelmed by the job and as result cut corners to save time?), know the information was classified? How computer literate is Hillary, a lawyer by profession? (Most lawyers her age are not very computer savvey in my experience.) Did she make assumptions about security etc. based on a little bit of knowledge? The truth is always hard to determine. Personally, I would give her the benefit of the doubt.
But: Read Krauthamer’s take in the National Post last Saturday. Americans of all stripes appear desperate about the what they are facing. The really sad thing is that America looks like it is broken, in part due to Democratic policies. But Trump? Pulease…
    What a mess!

Segments of this video will provide good fodder for GOP commercials. Was Comey correct by not recommending prosecution? Possibly, however, he did make four critical mistakes.
Mistakes by Jim Comey re the HRC investigation:

    1. In a high profile investigation like this why wasn’t Comey himself at HRC’s interview?
    2. Why wasn’t the interview taken under oath?
3, Why wasn’t the interview recorded?
    4. Why weren’t other statements by HRC under oath considered in the investigation?

Had item 4 been considered, the outcome of the investigation might have been reversed.

As I understand it, no charges are being considered. So, do we have a liberal bureaucrat soft peddling an almost crime or a conservative one trying to elevate a non issue? Frankly I have little trust of either protagonist and am sorry for the state of politics in our neighbours yard. There are tough decisions to be taken if there is to be any improvement I fear. It should be an interesting ride these next few months.

Another “he said she said” episode in the political arena. Who do you believe? Remember Mike Duffy and his “he said she said”. We will never know who is telling the truth with Hillary and who told the truth with Mike.

  • Fascinating issue. I have read some of the responses from others and, at the risk of inflaming the passions of my fellow readers, my thoughts do not conform to that of the majority. I will share this: the issue being addressed by the FBI was whether there was a reasonable prospect of conviction for a criminal offense. The answer is clearly “no”. However, as an aside, the police [FBI] do not make that determination – only the prosecutor makes that finding and it appears that William Clinton’s impromptu meeting with the AG likely passed the ball back to the FBI director. It was odd that the FBI Director was saddled with making that decision for the prosecution. However, he is right. Ms. Clinton may have been negligent or careless, or even reckless, but neither of those amount to a finding of the requisite mens rea [guilty mind] for guilt. The offense is not a strict liability offense – it is a mens rea offense where the Crown or Prosecution must prove intent. Conviction carries with it a term of imprisonment, so the prosecution must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she intentionally and voluntarily [the actus reus] committed the offense. Clearly, they can prove the actus reus [the act of sending the e-mail], but there is not a shred of evidence that could establish the mens rea. Therefore, conviction was impossible. She was not being investigated for lying. Even that would have failed because she had a reasonably held belief that what she was saying was true – it turns out that her recollections were not accurate – that does not amount to a criminal offense or a “lie”. Applying your own human experience, we have all encountered a situation where years after an event you believe it to be “green” but then it is shown that it was actually “blue” – does that mean you were lying? No, you were mistaken. The frailty of the human mind is that our memories fade with time – they don’t get better (ever). Mr. Trump may be the exception to that human truth, at least he will tell you that if asked [or not asked].

Many would have said throughout, as Mr. Trump did, that she was guilty and a liar. I would hear this and shake my head because if one is a trained lawyer one would know that the burden of proof could not be discharged in this case. It was a public show, similar to the foolish investigation of Mr. Clinton’s affairs. Ms. Clinton is a brilliant lady, competent lawyer, but she is a poor historian and untrained politician. One can show inconsistencies which the public will use to support the argument that she is not “trustworthy” – that is a subjective opinion. However, looked at objectively, the connection between the two is frail.

Sadly, both she and Mr. Trump appear to question the benefits of free trade. Everything Mr. Trump says on this topic [as do the Brexit supporters] contradicts the HOS-trade model [Heckscher-Ohlin-Samuelson trade theory] and even the Ricardian free trade argument. The HOS trade theory is the backbone of modern free trade. To me, of the two, Ms. Clinton is a better choice for the global markets. Mr. Trump thinks he can renegotiate NAFTA or even the GATT [General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade] – foolishness. Mr. Trump would reject the standing of “most favored nation” and turn trade in to a bi-lateral exercise. It shows he knows nothing about the law and even less about the benefits of free trade, be it comparative advantage or absolute advantage. The press have not fully discussed Mr. Trump’s integrity (or lack of it) – his use of bankruptcy laws is very, very troubling – he left his creditors high and dry for a “better deal” [which is what he wants to do with NAFTA]. He is now in litigation over Trump University and now bathes himself in the victim role by attacking the Judge hearing the case. This is really in an attempt to cover up his misdeeds. He will lose that fight for sure and he knows he is guilty – either civil or criminally.

Therefore, I watched the video three times. It did not alter my previous determination or assessment. It is a snap shot of various statements taken out of context and judged by the light of perfection. It is a standard to which no one can live up to and should never be expected. Perhaps our American friends are left with the choice of the lesser of 2 evils. They will like vote to protect their self-interest [economically] and perhaps pick the one with the least warts, so to speak. Regardless, the negative impact on the markets will be short-term if Ms. Clinton is elected BUT will likely be negative much, much longer in the event that Mr. Trump is their leader. The reason is that he would like to implement vast structural and foundational changes [build a wall, stop immigration, target China,…..] which will have profound negative implications for an aging demographic. Ms. Clinton appears to be more enlightened. She will also have the counsel of her husband – the 8 years of his presidency was one of the most GDP-growth expansion phases in US history. The 8 years after that – well, not so much.

    My kindest regards;

  • Who is to say what is classified information or not? I cannot imagine that Ms. Clinton would not realize that any information one communicates via any email system or device could be considered “secure,” unless it’s deeply encrypted. For example, if you study the recent activities and the troubling (crazy) intentions of the National Security Administration (NSA), as revealed by Edward Snowden in the stunning 2014 documentary “Citizenfour,” you realize that “secure” information is probably a scarce commodity today. “Citizenfour Official Trailer 1 (2014) – Edward Snowden Documentary”
Also, to think that the Americans are the only ones capable of gathering intelligence from anyone, anywhere, is likely wishful thinking. What do such developments mean for privacy and security of information in the business world? This subject is also touched on in Citizenfour.

  • I don’t think you should be publishing political commentary to your subscribers.
Should I begin to assume that you are now taking a political view of the actions of companies and that the political affiliations of their leadership will begin to be a criteria in your advice?

  • I have for some years thought Donald Trump was a good businessman.I also think Hillery
is very experienced & capable.Especially in foreign affairs. And let’s not forget she a very
smart husband to fall back on.I believe Donald Trump has gone to far with his many assertions regarding terrorists ect. Although Clinton was sloppy using her cell phone to the extreme I am less afraid of her being commander in chief than Donald Trump.I’m afraid this may get messier!

  • Clinton Loyalists routinely find themselves under the bus. The Clintons are a tag team from hell, every time they open their mouths you can smell sulphur. The entire upper echelon of the US Gov. seems to be implicated.
With corruption, follow the money. Disseminated Risk and Concentrated Benefit favour Key financial executives and hurt everyone else, not just Americans. Also my info says look east, all the way to the House of Saud particularly and OPEC generally who’s interest are enhanced by a weaker North American oil industry .

Is Trump the answer, I’m not sure, but I believe the US will survive him, I’m not sure America would survive Hillary.

  • I would hope that anyone who has spent his professional life dealing with evidence and human nature as I have would be loathe to form much of a conclusion about Hillary Clinton’s criminal responsibility or even her judgement based on an edited one minute 47 second set of sound bites. This video comes with no authorship declared but the bias seems intended to make Ms. Clinton look bad. Perhaps she is guilty of something, however the FBI director concludes she is not chargeable. I must agree that his conclusion does not appear to make sense following his damning statements beforehand. More questions are raised than answered here. If you are a Republican, you will be outraged; if you are a Democrat you will believe in her innocence. Since believing is seeing and not the other way around, someone else could create a video to make the candidate smell like roses.
Luckily, at least in Canada, the rule of law still applies and we do not convict people through propaganda videos although these can certainly influence opinions and voting behavior. Like Pat, I too am very interested in US politics and look for as much objective evidence as possible. This video is not part of it.

I think it’s clear enough. Mrs. Clinton just cannot be trusted. Some of the classified material over which she had custody as Secretary of State were to her worthless bits of offal for which foreign powers (for some strange reason!) seemed almost eager to pay huge sums. No downside there! Except the consequences for some who unwisely trusted this Administration by cooperating with it in one way or another will surely be mortal. Shrug. Her intentions were good. The Director couldn’t find bad ones anyway.
