The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is an index measuring the stock values of the 30 largest and most widely held companies in the United States (and it's no longer limited to just “industrial companies”). The Dow Jones Industrial Average was first calculated in 1896. This is the most widely known index run by Dow Jones & Company, and is informally known as the Dow. The Dow Jones average is unusual in that it only uses the price of one share of each of the companies that make it up. Other indexes' weightings rise and fall with the “market capitalization” or “market cap” of companies that make them up. A company's market cap is what you get when you multiply the stock price times the number of shares the company has outstanding. There are many ways for investors to invest in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. There are ETFs, mutual funds, options, and futures contracts and even a short fund that bets against the DJIA.
