The management expense ratio (or MER) is the percentage charged by mutual funds or ETFs for the management of their funds. Management fees are taken from the assets of the funds, lowering the overall return for investors. Management expense ratios tend to be much lower on ETFs than on conventional mutual funds. That's because most ETFs take a much simpler approach to investment. Instead of actively managing their clients' investments, they generally try to invest so as to mirror the holdings and performance of a particular stock-market index. With that said, it's important for investors to research and review the management expense ratio of every mutual fund and ETF you intend on investing in. As always, take a long view on MERs and their impact on the overall lifetime of your investments. Management expense ratios are one aspect of investing everyone should know about.
