BNS takes Thailand offer

BANK OF NOVA SCOTIA $71.02 (Toronto symbol BNS; Shares outstanding: 1.2 billion; Market cap: $86.7 billion; TSINetwork Rating: Above Average; Dividend yield: 5.1%; www.scotiabank.com) will now sell most of its 49.0% stake in Thailand’s Thanachart Bank. Thanachart recently agreed to merge with rival TMB Bank. Under the terms of the deal, Bank of Nova Scotia will receive cash and a 6% stake in the merged bank. It expects to record a $300 million gain when it completes the transaction early next year. To put that in context, Bank of Nova Scotia earned $2.26 billion, or $1.70 a share, in the quarter ended April 30, 2019. The bank still holds 49% of two Thanachart subsidiaries.
