O’Leary Canadian Income Opportunities Fund, $12.00, symbol OCY.UN on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 10.9 million; Market cap: $130.5 million), is a closed-end fund that aims to provide investors with income and capital growth by investing in Canadian corporate bonds, common stocks, income trusts and preferred shares. Right now, the fund has 48% its portfolio in income trusts and common shares, followed by corporate bonds (26%) convertible bonds (11%), cash (8%) and preferred shares (7%). O’Leary Canadian Income Opportunities Fund yields 9.0%. The fund trades at a 6.04% discount to the net value of its assets. It has an MER of 1.5%. The fund holds a total of 37% of its assets in bonds. We think that bonds are unlikely to perform as well in the next few years as they have in the last few, if only because interest rates may hold steady or rise.
