A: Spartan Energy, $2.40, symbol SPE on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 344.9 million; Market cap: $1.3 billion; www.spartanenergy.ca), develops, produces and explores for oil and natural gas, mostly in Saskatchewan. Spartan Energy is led by the former management of Spartan Oil. Bonterra Energy (symbol BNE on Toronto) bought that firm for $441 million at the end of 2012. Due mostly to its own acquisitions, Spartan Energy’s production in the three months ended March 31, 2017, jumped 121.6%, to 21,455 barrels of oil equivalent per day (91% oil and 9% gas) from an average of 9,683 barrels a year earlier. Cash flow rose sharply, to $49.0 million from $8.6 million. The gain was thanks to the higher output but also improved oil and gas prices. Due to more shares outstanding as a result of Spartan Energy’s acquisition, cash flow per share rose 200%, to $0.09 from $0.03.
