Q: I would like your comments regarding the outlook for the iShares MSCI United Kingdom ETF. It appears to hold good stocks, but I have heard very little about it. Thanks.

A: Needless to say, this ETF’s prospects are a lot brighter now than they were at this time last week! We see the results of the U.K. election last Thursday—a strong majority for Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party—as the best of all possible financial worlds for the U.K. Judging by the rise in the British pound and U.K. stock market that followed the election news, investors seem to agree. U.K. Prime Minister Johnson and U.S. President Trump seem to attract the same strong negative feelings from their political opponents, and similar predictions of bad things to come. Our best guess is that Mr. Johnson will do much better than his critics predict, as has Mr. Trump. The direction of the U.K. stock market now depends on a number of factors, just like any stock market.
