Rockwell Medical, $3.91, symbol RMTI on Nasdaq (Shares outstanding: 25.9 million; Market cap: $100.9 million, www.rockwellmed.com), makes solutions, including dialysate, that are used during kidney dialysis. The treatment for the majority of patients with failed kidneys is hemodialysis (also called kidney dialysis). Hemodialysis treatment usually lasts for four hours and is performed three times a week. During this procedure, blood is carried from the patient to a dialyzer, which is a device comprised of thousands of very fine hollow fibres that create a semi-permeable membrane. Blood flows through the membrane, and dialysate flows outside of it, removing impurities and excess water and properly adjusting the blood’s chemical balance. The “clean” blood is then carried back into the patient. However, the company’s growth prospects rest with its Soluble Ferric Pyrophosphate (SFP) drug, which delivers iron to dialysis patients’ bone marrow.
