ZoomMed Inc., $0.21, symbol ZMD on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 87.5 million; Market cap: $18.4 million), is a Quebec-based company that has developed a product it calls ZRx Prescriber. This is a hand-held pocket computer that lets physicians “write” and send prescriptions to pharmacists electronically. Aside from ZRx Prescriber, ZoomMed has an equipment division that sells and repairs new and used medical equipment in Quebec. The ZRx Prescriber allows a physician to choose a drug by selecting a bar code on the device. It then sends an email containing the name of the prescription to a pharmacy. The device also sends a copy of the email to the doctor’s office. The doctor later confirms the electronic prescription by following up with a signed hard copy. The ZRx Prescriber software can also run on a Windows-operated computer, a personal digital assistant (PDA), an Apple iPod Touch or an iPhone.
