Natcore Technology, $0.80, symbol NXT on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 38.6 million; Market cap: $30.9 million; www.natcoresolar.com), believes it has developed a new thin-film process that can be used to make solar cells that are more than twice as efficient as the best cells available today. The company says it has created a black surface on a silicon wafer with an average reflectance of 0.3% in the visible and near-infrared region of the solar spectrum. That would make it the “blackest” silicon solar cell surface ever recorded, which means it absorbs the vast majority of the sunlight that contacts it. Compared with cells that are available now, the company says this represents a tenfold reduction in reflectance over that portion of the spectrum, which is the source of about 80% of the usable power than can be drawn from sunlight. If successful, the technology would let solar cell makers cut their silicon use by 60%. Natcore holds cash of $2.8 million. That’s enough to…
