Over the past few months, I’ve often said that the market could hit bottom this fall, possibly in October. I said it could then go on to a fair-sized rise, lasting perhaps until late next year. As it happens, the market did hit a low in the first week of October, when both the Dow and the Toronto indices fell below 11,000. They then turned around and moved up by 1,000 to 1,500 points. Nobody knows for sure what will happen next, of course. However, several developments over the past week suggest we may be following the path I suggested. For one, the stock market put on a sharp gain on news that European politicians and bankers seem to have made some progress at papering over the European financial crisis. Nobody I know thinks the crisis has ended, of course. But if it looks as though the Europeans can hold things together for another year or two, it will touch off…
