ALIMENTATION COUCHE-TARD INC., $37.95, is a #1 Power Buy for 2021. The retailer (symbol ATD.B on Toronto) operates 11,983 convenience stores across North America and Europe. Due to opposition from the French government, Couche-Tard has now dropped its bid to buy Carrefour. That company is listed on the Paris Stock Exchange. Carrefour—which opened its first store in 1960—is one of Europe’s largest grocery retailers. It also operates hypermarkets (retail outlets that combine a department store with a grocery store); in addition, it has supermarkets in Asia and Latin America. The group employs more than 321,000 people worldwide and owns 12,225 stores in more than 30 countries. At $19.66 billion U.S., the purchase would have been the largest in Couche-Tard’s history. That offer is also equal to 59% of the company’s $42.0 billion (Canadian) market cap.
