A: Ivanhoe Mines Ltd., $12.92, symbol IVN on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 1.2 billion; Market cap: $15.6 billion; www.ivanhoemines.com), is a Vancouver-based mineral exploration and development company. Ivanhoe has three main mines/projects: The Kamoa-Kakula mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo (“DRC”) is a joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines and Chinese mining company Zijin Mining Group (symbol ZIJMY on the U.S. over-the-counter market). Kamoa-Kakula is the world’s fourth-largest copper deposit. It began producing copper in mid-2021 and achieved commercial production on July 1, 2021. Ivanhoe and Zijin Mining each hold a 39.6% interest in the Kamoa-Kakula mine, Crystal River holds a 0.8% interest, and the DRC government holds a 20% interest. Through phased expansions, Kamoa-Kakula aims to become one of the world’s largest copper producers. The Phase 1 plant began operations in May 2021 and the Phase 2 plant is on track to begin operations in the second quarter of 2022.
