Republicans and Democrats both worried that if the other side won, extremists would be in charge and would do all sorts of terrible things. Instead, the outcome verges on a stalemate. The two parties may wind up pursuing more bipartisan legislation. Combining the wisdom from both parties tends to limit unintended side-effects.
