Portfolio investing: Stick with U.S. stocks

Continued weakness in the U.S. dollar worries many investors. Some are dumping their U.S. stocks out of fear that the U.S. dollar is going to collapse altogether. Others are loading up on gold because they are worried that the drop in the U.S. dollar will lead to a global financial crisis. U.S. stocks have been a drag on Canadian investors’ investment performance for the past few years, mainly because of the drop in the U.S. dollar. They have been an even worse drag in the past eight months because of the drop in U.S. stock markets. This makes investors wonder if they should cut back on portfolio investing in U.S. stocks and invest more in Canada. My view on portfolio investing is that high-quality U.S. stocks, or mutual funds that hold those stocks, should make up 20% to 30% of most Canadians’ portfolios.
