HECLA MINING CO., $6.20, symbol HL on New York, explores for, and mines silver and gold in the U.S. and Mexico. Most of the company’s silver output comes from three of its sites: the Greens Creek mine in Alaska; the Lucky Friday project in Idaho; and the new San Sebastian mine in Mexico. Hecla’s Casa Berardi mine in Quebec, which it bought for $796 million in June 2013, supplies its gold. In the three months ended June 30, 2016, Hecla produced 4.2 million ounces of silver, up 71.2% from 2.5 million a year earlier. The rise came from higher ore grades at its mines, but mostly from the addition of San Sebastian; it contributed 1.3 million ounces in the quarter. The company’s gold output rose 40.9%, to 41,954 ounces from 30,939. Hecla started up San Sebastian in December 2015.
