WESTJET AIRLINES LTD., $19.47, symbol WJA on Toronto, launched its new ultra-low-cost carrier Swoop this week. Swoop will offer six weekly flights from Hamilton, Ontario, to Abbottsford, B.C., Edmonton, Winnipeg and Halifax; six weekly flights from Abbotsford to Hamilton; and three daily flights between Abbotsford and Edmonton. Service between Hamilton and Abbotsford began on June 20, while flights between Hamilton and Halifax, Edmonton and Winnipeg will launch on June 25. The three daily flights between Abbotsford and Edmonton will begin July 25. For Swoop, one-way fares, including taxes, fees and charges, will start as low as $39 for flights from Abbotsford to Edmonton, with the most expensive flights between Hamilton and Abbotsford coming in at $99. Passengers can bring a small personal item aboard, but Swoop will charge $36.75 for carry-on luggage, and $26.25 for a checked bag. OUR RECOMMENDATION: WestJet is a buy.
