BLACKBERRY LTD., $8.66, Toronto symbol BB, says it will phase out its Classic smartphone—with a physical keyboard and a touch screen—because of weak sales. In response, the company will soon launch two new phones. Unlike the Classic, which uses the BlackBerry 10 operating system, these new models will run on Google’s Android software. However, the company will add special security features to these phones. That should enhance their appeal to security-conscious corporations and government users. If BlackBerry’s handset business (36% of total revenue) continues to lose money, the company may shut it down. That would let it focus on its more-promising security software operations. OUR RECOMMENDATION: BlackBerry is still a hold, but only for highly aggressive investors.
