One of the top-selling golf books on Amazon right now is something called “Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump.” The title alone tells you all you need to know about the author’s politics, and that’s a sign of the times. The title makes me think of a joke from the 1990s about a curious golf practice, called “taking a mulligan”. That’s when you break the rules and take a second shot off the tee if you don’t like your first one. Casual golfers feel this puts a little more fun in the game. Serious golfers see it as a form of cheating, if not a sign of a major character flaw. These days, I play golf once or twice a year. In the late 1990s, however, I played once or twice a week.
