Short answers to current issues of importance for Canadian investors: Q: Pat, do you think this Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) collapse is powerful enough to set off a broad slump in the North American or even the world banking industry, something like the 2008/2009 downturn? A: I doubt it. My view is that the impact will more likely resemble what happens to the stock market as a whole when the penny stock segment of it goes into a slump. The SVB plunge simply isn’t in the same league as the 2008 banking downturn—not even close. Back then, the top 10 U.S. banks were all at risk. That’s because virtually the entire country was in trouble due to excessive real estate speculation, which affects the entire population and economy.
