In a miserable situation like the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it’s rare to hear good news. This past week, Russia carried out terror bombings of orphanages, maternity wards, hospitals and homes for the elderly. Meanwhile, some NATO members refused to close off Ukrainian airspace, or allow Ukraine’s neighbours to lend it their MIG jets. But some wiser and more generous decisions are having favourable effects. In particular, Ukraine now has supplies of advanced U.S. and U.K. anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons. This has allowed Ukraine to destroy bogged-down convoys of Russian soldiers and weapons. Meanwhile, it turns out that many Russian soldiers are conscripts who shipped out without being informed that they were going to fight a war. When they saw tanks in their convoy getting blown up and set on fire, numerous Russian conscripts are reported to have fled their units and run off to hide in the forest or countryside.
