The results of the U.S. general election relieved the worries of a lot of investors but didn’t thrill any of them. As I’ve said before, some investors looked to the election with dread. They feared a strong showing for Biden and the Democrats might lead to higher taxes and to the restoration of regulations that Trump got rid of. These investors feared this could stifle the U.S. economy and stock markets, and that the damage would spill over into Canada. As things now stand, it appears that Joe Biden won the election and will be inaugurated as President of the U.S. in January. President Biden will be able to make significant changes in regulations by issuing Executive Orders, just like Presidents Trump and Obama. To raise taxes or make other changes that investors feared, however, he needs to have control or at least co-operation from both houses of Congress.
