A healthy sense of skepticism is the most powerful and effective weapon you can apply to protect yourself from poor choices and outright bad investments. You can run into bad investments at any time, in good and bad markets. However, poor investment choices have become more and more common in the past few years. In fact, in our first client letter for 2022 (which we sent out in February), we included a “don’t buy” list for the first time. The list included tech-based investment innovations, headed up by bitcoin and other crypto oddities. It also includes many so-called “alternative investments.” This term now covers a wide range of assets that have little or no connection with each other, let alone with the stock market. This alternative investments market exposes investors to above-average risk.
