Mountain Province Diamonds, $4.12, symbol MDM on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 80.7 million; Market cap: $332.5 million; www.mountainprovince.com), owns 49% of the Gahcho Kue joint venture at Kennedy Lake in Canada’s Northwest Territories. Diamond miner De Beers Canada owns the other 51%. This project consists of a cluster of four diamond-bearing kimberlites, three of which have probable reserves of 31.3 million tonnes of ore grading 1.57 carats per tonne, for a total of 49 million carats. (Kimberlite is solidified molten magma that has risen to the surface from deep within the earth’s mantle. The flow of this molten magma millions of years ago acted like an elevator that lifted diamonds from deep below the earth’s surface. The partners aim to make Gahcho Kue the Northwest Territories’ fourth diamond mine. To that end, they have completed a positive feasibility study that envisions production of 4.5 million carats annually over 11 years.
