CGI GROUP INC., $57.32, Toronto symbol GIB.A, is Canada’s largest provider of computer-outsourcing services. It helps its clients automate certain routine functions such as accounting and buying supplies. That makes companies more efficient and lets them focus on their main businesses. In its 2016 second quarter, which ended March 31, 2016, CGI earned $268.3 million. That’s a 6.8% increase from the $251.2 million it earned a year earlier. Per-share profits gained 10.3%, to $0.86 from $0.78, on fewer shares outstanding. That missed the consensus estimate of $0.88. In the latest quarter, higher revenue in France, the U.K. and parts of Asia offset declining contributions from CGI’s U.S. defense clients. Revenue improved 5.7%, to $2.75 billion from $2.60 billion. The consensus forecast had been $2.74 billion. The weaker Canadian dollar also helped to lift revenue, contributing an extra $173.7 million....
ENBRIDGE INC. $46.75 (Toronto symbol ENB; Shares outstanding: 867.6 million; Market cap: $40.8 billion; TSINetwork Rating: Above Average; Divd. yield: 4.5%; www.enbridge.com) has agreed to sell 56.6 million common shares at $40.70 a share to several major brokerage firms to raise $2.3 billion. Enbridge will put that cash toward $18.2 billion in spending on new pipelines, wind farms and other projects between 2016 and 2019. The company has already secured shipping commitments from oil producers and other clients. That should cut the risk for these new projects. The extra cash flow from the new operations will allow Enbridge to increase its dividend by 10% to 12% a year through 2019; the current annual rate of $2.12 a share yields 4.5%. However, the stock is somewhat expensive at 21.0 times its projected 2016 earnings of $2.23 a share....

BANK OF MONTREAL, $74.15, Toronto symbol BMO, reported better-than-expected results this week, thanks mainly to strong gains from its U.S. operations. In its fiscal 2016 first quarter, which ended January 31, 2016, the bank’s revenue rose 0.4%, to $5.08 billion from $5.06 billion a year earlier. That beat the consensus forecast of $4.88 billion. Overall earnings increased 13.2%, to $1.2 billion from $1.0 billion. Earnings per share gained 14.4%, to $1.75 from $1.53, on fewer shares outstanding. These figures exclude unusual items such as the cost to integrate recent acquisitions. On that basis, they exceed the consensus estimate of $1.72 a share....

We feel that investors will profit the most by holding a well-balanced portfolio of high-quality stocks. However, if you don’t want to build a portfolio, or you want to supplement your individual stock holdings, then ETFs can provide a great alternative. The main factors we use to evaluate ETFs are the stocks they hold, the diversification of their holdings across the five economic sectors and the fees (MERs) they charge. In general, investors holding mainly ETFs would want, say, 60% in Canadian ETFs and 20% to 30% in U.S. ETFs....

Enbridge and TransCanada are facing strong opposition to their big pipeline proposals, so they’re focusing on smaller projects instead. This will give both companies more cash for dividends, but we feel TransCanada is the better buy right now. ENBRIDGE INC. $43 (Toronto symbol ENB; Conservative Growth and Income Portfolios, Utilities sector; Shares outstanding: 867.6 million; Market cap: $37.3 billion; Price-to-sales ratio: 1.1; Dividend yield: 4.9%; TSINetwork Rating: Above Average; www.enbridge.com) received regulatory approval for its $7.9-billion Northern Gateway pipeline in June 2014. This project would pump crude from Alberta to Kitimat, B.C. From there, tankers would ship it to customers in Asia. However, Ottawa recently banned oil tankers off the northern B.C. coast. Meanwhile, Enbridge is making progress on its ambitious $38-billion growth plan, which includes expanding its oil and gas pipelines and wind farms. The company will finish building these projects between 2016 and 2019....
