Shares of Wal-Mart and other grocery sellers fell on news that Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq symbol AMZN) will buy grocery chain Whole Foods Market Inc. (New York symbol WFM) for $13.7 billion. Whole Foods has more than 460 stores in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. However, Wal-Mart is in a strong position to compete with Amazon. For example, it already lets customers order their groceries online. As well, most Wal-Mart stores are in rural and suburban areas, while Whole Foods focuses on upscale urban neighbourhoods. The company also continues to expand its Internet businesses. It recently agreed to buy privately held Bonobos, which began selling men’s clothing and accessories over the Internet in 2007.
