Here’s the text of my latest letter to our Portfolio Management clients, sent in May:

“We’ve often written about an attractive market pattern that has paid off for us over the years. This pattern emerges when the following two factors come together to create what we’ve called a “double-barrelled buying opportunity”:
  1. Investors generally are fearful and have low expectations for stock-market performance; and
  2. There’s a lot of hidden value in the stock market—that is, value that is not widely recognized by investors.

NEWMONT CORP., $63.63, remains a buy for long-term growth and as a hedge against inflation. The company (New York symbol NEM; Shares outstanding: 801.2 million; Market cap: $51.2 billion; TSINetwork Rating: Average; Dividend yield: 3.5%; www.newmont.com) has now completed its acquisition of the 85.1% of GT Gold Corp....
IBM, $139.82, (New York symbol IBM; Shares o/s: 893.5 million; Market cap: $124.0 billion; Above Average; Yield: 4.7%) dropped in early July after the company announced that President Jim Whitehurst—appointed at the time of IBM’s $33 billion acquisition of cloud-software provider Red Hat—is leaving after two years.


Whitehurst became president when Arvind Krishna was named IBM CEO in January 2020.


Investors are likely worried the company will lose the benefit of Whitehurst’s expertise as it restructures to focus on cloud computing and artificial intelligence....

A: Lockheed Martin Corp., $381.12, symbol LMT on New York (Shares outstanding: 277.9 million; Market cap: $106.3 billion; www.lockheedmartin.com), is the world’s largest defence contractor.

The company operates 375 facilities, employs 110,000 people, and has over 16,000 active suppliers, in every U.S....
A: Steris plc, $203.05, symbol STE on New York (Shares outstanding: 99.7 million; Market cap: $20.1 billion; www.steris.com), sells sterilization equipment, surgical tables, and other products and services used in hospitals and laboratories.

The company operates in four segments: Healthcare Products (47% of revenues), Applied Sterilization Technologies (21%), Healthcare Specialty Services (19%), and Life Sciences (13%)....
Most activist investors have a spotty history of actually increasing shareholder value. Still, it’s worthwhile to keep an eye on them as they tend to zero in on companies with under-appreciated assets that can be sold or spun off. That kind of attention jives with our own focus on hidden value....
