CGI GROUP INC., $57.32, Toronto symbol GIB.A, is Canada’s largest provider of computer-outsourcing services. It helps its clients automate certain routine functions such as accounting and buying supplies. That makes companies more efficient and lets them focus on their main businesses. In its 2016 second quarter, which ended March 31, 2016, CGI earned $268.3 million. That’s a 6.8% increase from the $251.2 million it earned a year earlier. Per-share profits gained 10.3%, to $0.86 from $0.78, on fewer shares outstanding. That missed the consensus estimate of $0.88. In the latest quarter, higher revenue in France, the U.K. and parts of Asia offset declining contributions from CGI’s U.S. defense clients. Revenue improved 5.7%, to $2.75 billion from $2.60 billion. The consensus forecast had been $2.74 billion. The weaker Canadian dollar also helped to lift revenue, contributing an extra $173.7 million....

Airlines are ordering fewer new planes, as lower fuel costs have reduced the need to buy new fuel-efficient models. In addition, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating how Boeing accounts for the costs to develop new planes....
ALCOA INC. $9.85 (www.alcoa.com) has suffered lately as slowing industrial activity in China continues to dampen aluminum prices. In response, Alcoa is closing unprofitable smelters. Even so, declining cash flow could hurt its ability to service its debt of $9.1 billion....

The company has now finalized a deal to lease 20 Boeing 767 cargo jets from Air Transport Services Group. The jets will give Amazon direct control over an estimated 15% of the packages it ships in the U.S. each year....

ALIMENTATION COUCHE-TARD, $60.63, symbol ATD.B on Toronto, has agreed to buy 279 Esso gas stations in Ontario and Quebec from Imperial Oil for $1.7 billion. Imperial Oil is selling all of its 497 company-owned Esso gas stations to independent operators for $2.8 billion. Following the sale, franchisees will operate all of its 1,700 Esso stations across Canada. Besides Couche-Tard, the buyers include 7-Eleven Canada, which is getting 148 stations in Alberta and British Columbia. Parkland Fuel (Toronto symbol PKI) will buy 17 stations in Saskatchewan and Manitoba....
BANK OF MONTREAL, $74.15, Toronto symbol BMO, reported better-than-expected results this week, thanks mainly to strong gains from its U.S. operations. In its fiscal 2016 first quarter, which ended January 31, 2016, the bank’s revenue rose 0.4%, to $5.08 billion from $5.06 billion a year earlier. That beat the consensus forecast of $4.88 billion. Overall earnings increased 13.2%, to $1.2 billion from $1.0 billion. Earnings per share gained 14.4%, to $1.75 from $1.53, on fewer shares outstanding. These figures exclude unusual items such as the cost to integrate recent acquisitions. On that basis, they exceed the consensus estimate of $1.72 a share....
WESTJET AIRLINES $15.18 (Toronto symbol WJA; TSINetwork Rating: Extra Risk) (1-877-493-7853; www.westjet.com; Shares outstanding: 109.1 million; Market cap: $1.9 billion; Dividend yield: 3.7%) serves 100 destinations in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and Europe. Its fleet of 108 modern Boeing 737s are 30% more fuel efficient than older jets. The company reported lower revenue and profits in the latest quarter. Weakness in the Alberta market offset the benefit of 25% lower fuel prices. Fuel typically accounts for a third of the airline’s operating expenses. In the three months ended December 31, 2015, WestJet’s revenue fell 3.6%, to $958.7 million from $994.4 million a year earlier. Earnings fell 30.1%, to $63.4 million, or $0.51 a share. A year earlier, they were $90.7 million, or $0.71 a share. Aside from the revenue drop, higher costs, including maintenance and salaries, contributed to the earnings decline. The latest quarter also included a pre-tax foreign exchange loss of $10.0 million....
