The rising U.S. dollar lowered the value of the company’s foreign sales (particularly in Europe and Brazil) by $339 million. Excluding one-time items, earnings rose 12.0%, to $257.0 million, or $0.93 a share. A year earlier, the company earned $166.0 million, or $0.59 a share....
WESTJET AIRLINES LTD., $16.29, symbol WJA on Toronto, reported lower revenue and profits in the latest quarter. Weakness in the Alberta market offset the benefit of 25% lower fuel prices. Fuel typically accounts for a third of the airline’s operating expenses. In the three months ended December 31, 2015, WestJet’s revenue fell 3.6%, to $958.7 million from $994.4 million a year earlier. Earnings fell 30.1%, to $63.4 million, or $0.51 a share. A year earlier, they were $90.7 million, or $0.71 a share. Aside from the revenue drop, higher costs, including maintenance and salaries, contributed to the earnings decline. The latest quarter also included a pre-tax foreign exchange loss of $10.0 million. Since the end of the quarter, though, the company’s load factor has improved—it rose to 80.1% in January 2016 from 79.5% in January 2015. In its fiscal 2015 third quarter, which ended September 30, 2015, Fair Isaac’s revenue rose 5.0%, to $232.8 million from $221.6 million a year earlier. Sales at the company’s applications division (64% of the total) fell 1.6% on weaker demand for marketing and fraud-detection software. However, sales of creditscoring programs (25%) jumped 24.5%, while sales of analytics software (11%) gained 8.7%....

RUSSEL METALS INC., $19.26, symbol RUS on Toronto, is one of North America’s largest metal distributors, serving 39,000 clients at 53 locations in Canada and 12 in the U.S. In the three months ended September 30, 2015, Russel’s revenue fell 25.5%, to $773.4 million from $1.04 billion a year earlier. The company’s sales mainly declined because revenue fell 40% at its energy products division, which supplies pipes for oil and gas drillers. Earnings dropped sharply, to $12.8 million, or $0.21 a share, from $33.0 million, or $0.54. The latest figure included a $2-million charge related to a more than 7% cut to the company’s workforce. Russel’s earnings fell faster than its revenue because steel prices moved down in the latest quarter. That hurts the company’s profit margins and causes it to suffer losses on its inventory....
CHIPOTLE MEXICAN GRILL, $649.72, symbol CMG on New York, is a Denver-based Mexican restaurant chain. It charges slightly higher prices than fast food companies but offers better quality food, including naturally raised meat, and superior decor and service. The stock dropped almost 7% this week after Chipotle reported slowing sales growth and earnings that failed to meet expectations. In the three months ended September 30, 2015, the company’s sales rose 12.2%, to $1.22 billion from $1.08 billion a year earlier. Its restaurants attracted more customers during the quarter, pushing up same-restaurant sales by 2.6%. However, that was below the 4.3% increase in the preceding quarter and well short of a 19.8% jump a year earlier....
