CENOVUS ENERGY INC., $28.74, Toronto symbol CVE, has received regulatory approval to expand its Foster Creek oil-sands project in northern Alberta. Cenovus owns 50% of this project; U.S.-based oil company ConocoPhillips (New York symbol COP) owns the other 50%. The company will expand Foster Creek in three phases over the next seven years. When the expansion is finished, Foster Creek’s average daily production will rise to 210,000 barrels from the current 120,000 barrels. Cenovus has also asked for approval for a fourth phase, which would bring Foster Creek’s average daily production up to 235,000 barrels, starting in 2019. Cenovus’ share is 117,500 barrels. To put these figures in context, Cenovus’ average daily production, including natural gas, was 253,733 barrels in its latest quarter....
TECK RESOURCES LTD. $39 (Toronto symbol TCK.B; Conservative Growth Portfolio, Resources sector; Shares outstanding: 589.5 million; Market cap: $23.0 billion; Price-to-sales ratio: 2.4; Dividend yield: 1.0%; SI Rating: Average) is a leading producer of metallurgical coal, a key ingredient in steelmaking. Coal accounted for 46% of Teck’s 2009 revenue, and 54% of its earnings. Teck also produces copper (28%, 31%) and zinc (26%, 15%). Thanks to higher coal and copper prices, Teck’s earnings rose 110.1% in the three months ended June 30, 2010, to $376 million from $179 million a year earlier. In July 2009, Teck sold $1.7 billion of class-B subordinate-voting shares to a Chinese sovereign wealth fund, and used the proceeds to pay down debt. Because of the extra shares outstanding, earnings per share rose 74.2% in the latest quarter, to $0.64 from $0.37....
Nautilus Minerals Inc., $2.12, symbol NUS on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 155.6 million; Market cap; $329.8 million), is exploring for high-grade sulphide deposits on the ocean floor. These deposits often contain copper, gold, zinc and silver. Russian steel and mining holding company Metalloinvest owns 21% of Nautilus. Other major investors include U.K.-based Anglo American plc, one of the world’s largest mining companies, which has an 11.1% stake and Teck Resources (6.8%). Nautilus is mainly focused on developing its Solwara 1 project near Papua New Guinea. The company plans to use deep-water robotic equipment to dredge the ocean floor and pump the material to barges on the surface. From there, the barges will ship the material to an onshore plant for processing....
MANITOBA TELECOM SERVICES INC., $24.98, Toronto symbol MBT, fell 9% on Friday after the company cut its quarterly dividend by 34.6%, to $0.425 a share from $0.65. The new annual rate of $1.70 yields 6.8%. The company is the main provider of telephone services in Manitoba. Its Allstream subsidiary sells telephone, Internet and other communication services to businesses across Canada. The slow economy has cut business spending on new communication systems. That has hurt Allstream’s earnings. As well, Manitoba Telecom’s consumer businesses continue to face strong competition from cable companies....
Thompson Creek Metals, $9.86, symbol TCM on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 139.8 million; Market cap: $1.4 billion), is a Canadian molybdenum producer with mining, milling, roasting and marketing operations in Canada and the U.S. The company’s operations include the Thompson Creek mine in Idaho, a roasting facility in Langeloth, Pennsylvania, and 75% of the Endako mine and roaster in British Columbia. Molybdenum is either mined directly, or recovered as a by-product of copper mining. The metal helps strengthen alloys and high-temperature steels, and prevents them from rusting....
In response to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, regulators will probably require offshore drillers to install more equipment aimed at preventing future spills. These extra costs would hurt the profits of companies that are active in the Gulf. That should spur more development of less-risky onshore oil and natural-gas deposits, particularly Canada’s oil sands.
Safety, falling costs could drive producers back to the land

The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will probably lead to greater regulation of offshore drilling. Because of the extra costs, energy-exploration firms may turn their attention to safer onshore oil and natural-gas deposits, like Canada’s oil sands. That would help these three companies, which supply equipment and services to oil-sands producers. However, only two are buys right now. SNC-LAVALIN GROUP INC. $45 (Toronto symbol SNC; Aggressive Growth Portfolio, Manufacturing & Industry sector; Shares outstanding: 151.0 million; Market cap: $6.8 billion; Price-to-sales ratio: 1.2; Dividend yield: 1.5%; SI Rating: Average) is a leading Canadian engineering and construction company. SNC designs and builds large public-works projects, such as roads, bridges, transit systems and water-treatment plants. It also builds mines, chemical plants and electrical power systems. Petroleum and chemical projects accounted for 14% of SNC’s 2009 revenue. Last year, the company designed a new steam-assisted gravity-drainage system for Husky Energy Inc.’s Sunrise oil-sands project. This technology injects steam into a well to loosen the heavy oil and make it easier to pump to the surface. SNC is working on similar systems for oil-sands projects jointly owned by Teck Resources Ltd. and UTS Energy Corp....
CGI GROUP INC. $16 (Toronto symbol GIB.A; Aggressive Growth Portfolio, Manufacturing & Industry sector; Shares outstanding: 285.6 million; Market cap: $4.6 billion; Price-to-sales ratio: 1.3; No dividends paid; SI Rating: Extra Risk) continues to win new computer-outsourcing contracts. For example, the company recently signed a seven-year deal with Ontario’s Beer Store retail chain. Under the contract, CGI will help The Beer Store improve the efficiency of its distribution network. This will help the Beer Store expand its sales and earnings by avoiding shortages of top-selling beer brands. The company did not reveal the contract’s exact value, but it did say that it is a multi-million-dollar deal. As well, CGI will manage the Atlantic Lottery Corp.’s data centre and provide related support services. This seven-year deal is worth $125 million. These contracts are tiny next to CGI’s annual revenue of $3.8 billion. But long-term deals like these give it steady, predictable revenue streams. They also help CGI build customer loyalty, and sell more services to new clients....
Every Wednesday, we publish our “Investor Toolkit” series on TSI Network. Whether you’re a new or experienced investor, these weekly updates are designed to give you specific advice on the fundamentals of successful investing. Each Investor Toolkit update gives you a fundamental tip and shows you how you can put it into practice right away. Today’s tip: “Beware of companies that are more interested in boosting their stock than in building their business.” Penny stock promoters love to make deals with major, household-name companies. That’s because they think the public is far more likely to buy penny stocks that have agreements with Teck Resources, BHP Billiton or some other major mining company to finance exploration of their mining claims. Or if Sony, Apple or some other household-name multinational has agreed to evaluate their computer program or electronic gadget. The link with a major gives them instant credibility, especially with investors who buy penny stocks....
SUNCOR ENERGY INC., $33.08, Toronto symbol SU, owns 60% of the proposed Fort Hills oil-sands project in northern Alberta. The company received its stake in Fort Hills as part of its August 2009 takeover of Petro-Canada. UTS Energy Corp. (Toronto symbol UTS) and Teck Resources (see below) each own 20% of Fort Hills. Suncor rose 7% this week after French oil company Total S.A. agreed to buy UTS at a substantial premium. UTS’s 20% stake in Fort Hills is the company’s major asset, so the takeover helped unlock some of the project’s value. In light of rising construction costs, Suncor is still deciding whether to go ahead with the project. It expects to make a decision by the end of 2010....
