Mr. McKeough: I recently read about a company with power generation in the U.S. and Canada called Calpine Corp. What do you think of this company from an investment perspective?

Calpine Corp., $18.83, symbol CPN on New York (Shares outstanding: 435.2 million; Market cap: $8.3 billion; www.calpine.com), is a major U.S. power provider, with 92 plants that can produce a total of over 28,000 megawatts. It sells power to customers in 20 states and Canada and is one of the largest natural-gas-fired plant operators in the U.S. Calpine is now buying a natural-gas-fired plant from MinnTex Power Holdings LLC for $625 million. The facility, which is outside San Antonio, Texas, can produce up to 1,050 megawatts. Electricity demand continues to rise in Texas, and Calpine is increasing its presence there in response. This latest deal follows a $432-million plant purchase in central Texas in 2012. Calpine has also expanded two plants in the Houston area, which will add 520 megawatts to its capacity in the state this year.
