POWER CORP. $29.45 (Toronto symbol POW; Shares outstanding: 414.4 million; Market cap: $13.8 billion; TSINetwork Rating: Above Average; Dividend yield: 4.6%; www.powercorporation.com) holds its financial assets through its 65.7% stake in Power Financial. That company’s holdings include 58.7% of IGM Financial, a leading Canadian mutual fund provider.
IGM has now acquired 10% of Personal Capital Corp. This California-based firm offers traditional wealth management services combined with software that helps it clients monitor their portfolios and financial goals.
IGM paid $50 million U.S. for this stake. It will pay an additional $25.0 million U.S. within the next year. That will increase its ownership to 15%.
IGM operates mainly in Canada, so this purchase provides greater international exposure. It will also tap Personal Capital’s expertise to develop products for clients without full-service advisors.
