Teledyne Technologies Inc. Converts Rising Defense Budgets Into Strong Profits

Teledyne Technologies Inc. is a key technology supplier delivering imaging, defense, and instrumentation systems

A Member of Pat McKeough’s Inner Circle recently asked for his advice on an elite industrial technology firm that designs and manufactures high-performance digital imaging sensors, specialized monitoring instrumentation, aerospace and defense electronics, and engineered systems.

Pat likes the firm’s competitive moat built around proprietary, high-reliability sensing, test, and imaging components that can’t easily be substituted in defense, aerospace, or industrial automation architectures. The secular tailwinds behind its core businesses are accelerating simultaneously: escalating global defense spending demands its infrared, electro-optical, and electronic warfare subsystems, while commercial aerospace build rates and deepwater oceanographic infrastructure continue to generate long-cycle purchase orders. However, Pat notes the company is vulnerable to potential deferrals or shifts in governmental defense appropriations, as government and defense programs represent a substantial portion of overall group billings.

Teledyne Technologies Inc. (Symbol TDY on New York; www.teledyne.com) is a sensing and imaging technology specialist.

The company provides technologies to sense, analyze and distribute information. Its markets include aerospace and defence, factory automation, air and water quality monitoring, electronics, oceanographic research, deepwater oil and gas exploration and production, and medical imaging.

Teledyne operates mainly in the U.S., the U.K., and Western and Northern Europe. Customers include the U.S. Department of Defense, aerospace contractors, oil and gas exploration and development companies, industrial firms, and airlines.

The company has four operating segments: Digital Imaging (52% of revenue), Instrumentation (24%), Aerospace and Defense Electronics (17%), and Engineered Systems (7%).

On October 31, 2025, the company acquired TransponderTech, Saab AB’s communication and navigation solutions business. The Swedish-based business’s commercial maritime products include Automatic Identification System (AIS), VHF Data Exchange System (VDES), and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technologies.

TransponderTech is also a pioneer in developing the next-generation maritime AIS solution known as VDES. VDES transponders offer enhanced security, expanded data exchange capabilities, and interoperability with low Earth orbit satellites, enabling global coverage for maritime operators.

The acquisition of TransponderTech was Teledyne’s third acquisition in 2025. It now operates under Teledyne Flir’s Maritime group. The company did not disclose the price of the purchase.

Shortly after the TransponderTech acquisition, Teledyne acquired DD-Scientific Holdings Ltd. on January 14, 2026. DD-Scientific is a U.K.-based maker of electrochemical gas sensors.

The acquisition complements Teledyne’s range of sensors, optical imaging cameras and instrumentation across power generation, petrochemical and medical industries.

The company did not disclose the price of the acquisition.

Teledyne’s AI integration should help power future results

In the quarter ended September 27, 2026, Teledyne Technologies saw its total revenue increase 9.4%, to $1.68 billion from $1.54 billion a year earlier. Revenue rose due to higher sales of infrared imaging detectors and subsystems for space and unmanned applications, accelerated organic growth in the Digital Imaging segment, and sales increases across each of its major commercial imaging businesses—including industrial vision sensors & systems and healthcare imaging, alongside maritime products and $11.7 million in incremental sales from recent acquisitions.

Excluding one-time items, earnings were $315.1 million, or $6.72 a share. That was up 19.1% from $264.5 million, or $5.57. A favourable product mix, particularly in the Digital Imaging segment, and the higher sales allowed profit to grow faster than revenue.

Teledyne now aims to integrate AI into its offerings. For example, in September 2025, it introduced the Boson+ IQ development kit, combining advanced thermal sensors with Prism AI software for edge AI-based thermal imaging across industrial, security, and defence applications. Teledyne Flir has also announced a partnership with Nvidia to integrate advanced AI capabilities into its thermal camera platforms, enabling real-time analytics and object detection.

Teledyne’s outlook is strong. It sells into strong markets and has a balanced mix of government and commercial business.

Currently, the company’s Digital Imaging unit is reporting solid demand for infrared imaging detectors and components and subsystems for defence and commercial applications. The Instrumentation unit continues to benefit from rising sales of marine instrumentation due to stronger defence and offshore energy markets.

In addition, the company’s Aerospace & Defense Electronics operations have achieved strong growth, thanks to an expanding military market.

The shares trade at a reasonable 24.9 times the $24.74 per share the company is expected to earn in 2026—given its growth prospects.

Recommendation in Pat’s Inner Circle: Teledyne Technologies Inc. is a buy for long-term gains.
