It’s a broadly diversified index that mainly consists of big U.S. companies. This Vanguard ETF has an MER of just 0.09%. The $46.8 billion fund holds Apple, Alphabet, Facebook, Amazon.com, Coca-Cola, Home Depot, Walt Disney. Other top holdings include Philip Morris International, Comcast, Visa, Gilead Sciences and Oracle Corp. Its breakdown by industry is as follows: Technology, 23.9%; Consumer Services, 23.0%; Health Care, 14.2%; Financials, 12.5%; Industrials, 11.5%; Consumer Goods, 10.9%; Oil and Gas, 2.7%; Materials, 1.0%; and Telecom Services, 0.3%....

FEDEX CORP., $163.55, New York symbol FDX, jumped 13% this week after it reported better-than-expected quarterly results. It also increased its full-year earnings forecast. In the third quarter of its 2016 fiscal year, which ended February 29, 2016, the company earned $692 million. That’s up 18.1% from $586 million a year earlier. Earnings per share gained 23.6%, to $2.51 from $2.03, on fewer shares outstanding. These figures exclude costs to settle several lawsuits and other unusual items. On that basis, the latest earnings beat the consensus estimate of $2.34 a share....
AMAZON.COM $574.27 (Nasdaq symbol AMZN; TSINetwork Rating: Extra Risk) (206- 266-1000; www.amazon.com; Shares outstanding: 470.8 million; Market cap: $271.7 billion; No dividends paid) continues to build its own shipping network. The company has now finalized a deal to lease 20 Boeing 767 cargo jets from Air Transport Services Group. The new fleet will reduce Amazon’s reliance on carriers such as United Parcel Service and FedEx. The jets will give Amazon direct control over an estimated 15% of the packages it ships in the U.S. each year....

ALIMENTATION COUCHE-TARD, $60.63, symbol ATD.B on Toronto, has agreed to buy 279 Esso gas stations in Ontario and Quebec from Imperial Oil for $1.7 billion. (Imperial Oil is a recommendation of The Successful Investor, our newsletter that focuses on conservative investments.) Imperial Oil is selling all of its 497 company-owned Esso gas stations to independent operators for $2.8 billion. Following the sale, franchisees will operate all of its 1,700 Esso stations across Canada. Besides Couche-Tard, the buyers include 7-Eleven Canada, which is getting 148 stations in Alberta and British Columbia. Parkland Fuel (Toronto symbol PKI) will buy 17 stations in Saskatchewan and Manitoba....
