NASDAQ symbol AMZN, is the leading bookseller on the Internet, as well as a leading video and music seller. It also has numerous other store categories, including electronics, computer games, toys and tools. Through Amazon Services, the company also offers programs that let sellers market on its web sites.

That firm, and its 460 locations, will continue to operate under the Whole Foods name and as a separate unit of Amazon.com.


Amazon spends big to maintain its rapid growth....
SHOPIFY INC. $115.97 (Toronto symbol SHOP; TSINetwork Rating: Extra Risk) (613-241-2828; www.shopify.ca; Shares o/s: 90.7 million; Market cap: $10.8 billion; No dividend) offers merchants of all sizes Internet-based software to design and manage sales at their stores, websites and many other channels.


Shopify will soon add eBay (symbol EBAY on Nasdaq and a recommendation of Wall Street Stock Forecaster) to its growing number of sales channels.


This means that when shoppers use eBay to buy something from a Shopify merchant, their orders automatically go to Shopify for processing....
Shares of Loblaw and Metro—and many other grocers— fell on news that online retailer Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq symbol AMZN and a recommendation of Stock Pickers Digest) will buy organic grocery chain Whole Foods (New York symbol WFM). It will pay $13.7 billion U.S.


Investors fear that Amazon’s e-commerce expertise will let it capture a large share of the grocery retail business in the same way it has disrupted sellers of books, music and clothing.


However, Loblaw and Metro already let their customers order groceries online and pick them up at the store....

LOBLAW COMPANIES $71.45 (Toronto symbol L; Shares outstanding: 398.4 million; Market cap: $28.4 billion; TSINetwork Rating: Above Average; Dividend yield: 1.5%; www.loblaw.ca) operates over 1,090 supermarkets and 1,325 Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacies across Canada.


The company’s shares are down, along with those of most other grocers, following an announcement by Amazon.com (symbol AMZN on Nasdaq and a recommendation of Stock Pickers Digest): the online company plans to buy organic grocery chain Whole Foods (symbol WFM on New York) for $13.7 billion in cash.


Profit margins for Canadian grocery chains are already low....

Amazon.com’s deal to buy Whole Foods has hurt the share price of these two competing retailers.
