CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY $230.40 (Toronto symbol CP; shares ooutstanding: 147.7 million; Market cap: $33.8 billion; TSINetwork Rating: Above Average; Dividend yield: 1.0%; www.cpr.ca) ships freight over a 22,000-kilometre rail network between Montreal and Vancouver, with links to hubs in the U.S.

The company has agreed to repurchase up to 755,000 of its shares from two separate private sellers at a discount to the market price....

DOREL INDUSTRIES INC. $32 (Toronto symbol DII.B; High-Growth Payer Portfolio; Consumer sector; Shares outstanding: 32.4 million; Market cap: $1.0 billion; Dividend yield: 4.8%; Dividend Sustainability Rating: Above Average; www.dorel.com) makes ready-to-assemble home and office furniture; juvenile products such as car seats, strollers, high chairs, toddler beds and cribs; and bicycles and other sporting goods.

The company last raised its dividend in August 2012 when it doubled that quarterly payment to $0.30 U.S....

Each of these three small industrial firms has used acquisitions to expand into new markets and regions. While it pays to take a skeptical view of companies that buy other firms to grow, we feel these particular purchases will pay off. Even so, not all of three stocks are now buys....

BROADRIDGE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS INC. $89 (New York symbol BR; Finance Sector; Shares o/s: 116.6 million; Market cap: $10.4 billion; Takeover Target Rating: Medium; Divd. yield 2.2%; TSINetwork Rating: Average; www.broadridge.com) began trading on April 2, 2007, after it was spun off from New York-listed Automatic Data Processing (symbol ADP).

We recommended the spinoff shortly after that, in the May 2007 issue of our Stock Pickers Digest newsletter at $20.68 a share.

While TD (see page 1) is our favourite for new buying, we also like the outlook for Canada’s other big banks. We advise all Canadian investors to hold at least three of them.

Like TD, the remaining four banks trade at attractive multiples to their improved earnings; each should also continue to increase its dividend....
