Dividend Stocks

Dividends can produce as much as a third of your total return over long periods, and you can even retire on dividends.

There are 4 key stock dividend dates that are involved with dividend payments:

1- The Declaration Date is several weeks in advance of a dividend payment—it’s when company’s board of directors sets the amount and timing of the proposed payment.

2- The Payable Date is the date set by the board on which the dividend will actually be paid out to shareholders.

3- The Record Date is for shareholders who hold the stock before the payable date and receive the dividend payment. That date is set any number of weeks before the payable date.

4-The Ex-Dividend Date is two business days before the record date and it’s when the shares begin to trade without their dividend. If you buy stocks one day or more before their ex-dividend date, you will still get the dividend. That’s when a stock is said to trade cum-dividend. If you buy on the ex-dividend date or later, you won’t get the dividend. The ex-dividend date is in place to allow pending stock trades to settle.

Fastenal Company, $46.12, symbol FAST on Nasdaq (Shares outstanding: 288.9 million; Market cap: $13.3 billion; www.fastenal.com), is a leading wholesale distributor of industrial and construction supplies. It has 2,630 wholesale and retail stores in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central America, Asia, Europe and South Africa....
Slate Office REIT, $8.09, symbol SOT.UN on Toronto (Units outstanding: 30.1 million; Market cap: $243.2 million; www.slateofficereit.com), owns 34 office properties. In all, these buildings contain 44 million square feet....
BANK OF MONTREAL, $83.44, Toronto symbol BMO, gained 1% this week after announcing it will raise its dividend. The bank also said it’s setting aside more funds to cover potential bad loans to Canadian oil and gas firms; and with more of its customers banking online, it will cut 4% of its workforce. In its fiscal 2016 second quarter, which ended April 30, 2016, Bank of Montreal earned $1.152 billion. That’s a gain of 0.5% over $1.146 billion a year earlier. Due to fewer shares outstanding, earnings per share rose 1.2%, to $1.73 from $1.71. These figures exclude severance payments and other unusual items. On that basis, the latest earnings missed the consensus estimate of $1.75 a share....
CAE INC., $16.00, Toronto symbol CAE, is a leading maker of flight simulators and operates pilot-training schools in over 30 countries. It also produces simulators for military aircraft as well as mannequins and other medical-simulators for training health professionals. The company earned $239.3 million in the year ended March 31, 2016. That’s up 18.9% from $201.2 million a year earlier. Earnings per share also jumped 17.1%, rising to $0.89 from $0.76, on more shares outstanding. If you exclude costs tied to its restructuring plan and a tax adjustment, CAE earned $0.86 a share for the fiscal year. That beat the consensus estimate of $0.84....
CANADIAN TIRE CORP., $141.12, Toronto symbol CTC.A, owns 499 Canadian Tire stores. They sell automotive, household and sporting goods. Franchisees run most of these outlets. The company’s other operations include 296 gas stations and 91 PartSource auto parts stores. More recently, Canadian Tire acquired Mark’s, which sells casual and work clothing through 381 stores. It also purchased the Forzani Group, which sells sporting goods and athletic wear through 432 stores, including Sport Chek and Sports Experts. In the three months ended April 2, 2016, Canadian Tire’s sales rose 1.8%, to $2.56 billion from $2.51 billion a year earlier. That matched the consensus forecast. Overall same-store sales improved 2.4%....
