Dividend Stocks

Dividends can produce as much as a third of your total return over long periods, and you can even retire on dividends.

There are 4 key stock dividend dates that are involved with dividend payments:

1- The Declaration Date is several weeks in advance of a dividend payment—it’s when company’s board of directors sets the amount and timing of the proposed payment.

2- The Payable Date is the date set by the board on which the dividend will actually be paid out to shareholders.

3- The Record Date is for shareholders who hold the stock before the payable date and receive the dividend payment. That date is set any number of weeks before the payable date.

4-The Ex-Dividend Date is two business days before the record date and it’s when the shares begin to trade without their dividend. If you buy stocks one day or more before their ex-dividend date, you will still get the dividend. That’s when a stock is said to trade cum-dividend. If you buy on the ex-dividend date or later, you won’t get the dividend. The ex-dividend date is in place to allow pending stock trades to settle.

We think very highly of stocks that have been paying dividends for five or more years, at TSI Network. Many of these stocks fit in well with our three-part Successful Investor philosophy:

1- Invest mainly in well-established companies;

2- Spread your money out across most if not all of the five main economic sectors (Manufacturing & Industry; Resources & Commodities; Consumer; Finance; and Utilities);

3- Downplay or avoid stocks in the broker/media limelight.

MOLSON COORS CANADA INC. $64 (www.molsoncoors.com) reported that its earnings rose 2.3% in 2013, to $727.1 million from $710.5 million in 2012 (all amounts expect share price in U.S. dollars). Due to more shares outstanding, earnings per share gained 1.0%, to $3.95 from $3.91....
BANK OF NOVA SCOTIA, $63.61, Toronto symbol BNS, continues to benefit from strong car loan and credit card demand in Canada, rising stock markets and an acquisition. The bank’s November 2012 purchase of ING Direct, which offers no-fee banking services over the Internet, continues to spur its growth. Bank of Nova Scotia will soon change this business’s name to Tangerine, which will let it keep using the orange colour associated with the ING Direct brand. As well, rising stock markets have increased the value of the assets the bank’s wealth management business administers. However, volatile currency exchange rates and higher costs have hurt profits at its international banking operations....
ROYAL BANK OF CANADA, $72.16, Toronto symbol RY, earned $2.1 billion in the quarter ended January 31, 2014, up 2.2% from $2.05 billion a year earlier. Per-share earnings rose 3.0%, to $1.38 from $1.34, on fewer shares outstanding. Excluding a loss on the sale of its Jamaican banking operations, Royal earned $1.44 share in the latest quarter, matching the consensus forecast. Overall revenue rose 7.6%, to $8.5 billion from $7.6 billion. Revenue at Royal’s retail banking division (which supplied 40% of the total) rose 6.9%. That’s partly due to its February 2013 purchase of Ally Financial’s Canadian operations for $3.7 billion. Ally, which provides car loans through 1,600 dealerships, contributed $62 million to Royal’s revenue and $22 million to its earnings in the latest quarter. Higher demand for mortgages and consumer and business loans also contributed to the improved results....
TIM HORTONS INC., $58.25, Toronto symbol THI, rose this week after it reported higher-than-expected quarterly earnings. It also raised its dividend and announced a new share buyback plan. The company operates 3,588 coffee-and-donut stores in Canada and 859 in the U.S. It also has 38 outlets in the Persian Gulf. In the three months ended December 29, 2013, Tim Hortons’ revenue rose 10.7%, to $898.5 million from $811.6 million a year earlier. That’s mainly because it renovated more outlets, which let it charge franchisees higher fees. Same-store sales rose 1.6% at its Canadian locations and 3.1% in the U.S....
CANADA BREAD CO. LTD., $72.30, Toronto symbol CBY, has accepted a $72.00-a-share takeover offer from Mexican bakery giant Grupo Bimbo SAB. Canada Bread’s shares are trading slightly higher than the bid. That’s because the deal lets the company keep paying quarterly dividends of up to $0.75 a share until Grupo Bimbo completes the takeover, probably by June 30, 2014. Before the deal, Canada Bread paid quarterly dividends of $0.50 a share. Investors should tender their shares to Grupo Bimbo to receive the full $72.00 without paying brokerage fees....
TD Bank recently overtook Royal Bank as Canada’s largest bank by assets. That’s partly because it has spent about $20 billion in the past three years buying other businesses.

Growth by acquisition is riskier than internal growth, as acquisitions carry an above-average chance of unpleasant surprises....

In addition to TD (see page 21), we also like the outlook for Canada’s other four big banks. Each has its particular risks, but all are good choices for long-term growth and income.

ROYAL BANK OF CANADA $71 (Toronto symbol RY; Conservative Growth and Income Portfolios, Finance sector; Shares outstanding: 1.4 billion; Market cap: $99.4 billion; Price-to-sales ratio: 2.7; Dividend yield: 3.8%; TSINetwork Rating: Above Average; www.rbc.com) is Canada’s second-largest bank, with $860.8 billion of assets.

Royal recently agreed to sell its 13 branches and related operations in Jamaica....
