Dividend Stocks

Dividends can produce as much as a third of your total return over long periods, and you can even retire on dividends.

There are 4 key stock dividend dates that are involved with dividend payments:

1- The Declaration Date is several weeks in advance of a dividend payment—it’s when company’s board of directors sets the amount and timing of the proposed payment.

2- The Payable Date is the date set by the board on which the dividend will actually be paid out to shareholders.

3- The Record Date is for shareholders who hold the stock before the payable date and receive the dividend payment. That date is set any number of weeks before the payable date.

4-The Ex-Dividend Date is two business days before the record date and it’s when the shares begin to trade without their dividend. If you buy stocks one day or more before their ex-dividend date, you will still get the dividend. That’s when a stock is said to trade cum-dividend. If you buy on the ex-dividend date or later, you won’t get the dividend. The ex-dividend date is in place to allow pending stock trades to settle.

We think very highly of stocks that have been paying dividends for five or more years, at TSI Network. Many of these stocks fit in well with our three-part Successful Investor philosophy:

1- Invest mainly in well-established companies;

2- Spread your money out across most if not all of the five main economic sectors (Manufacturing & Industry; Resources & Commodities; Consumer; Finance; and Utilities);

3- Downplay or avoid stocks in the broker/media limelight.

PRECISION DRILLING CORP., $9.75, Toronto symbol PD, sells contract drilling services to oil and natural gas producers. The stock fell sharply after the Alberta Investment Management Company (AIMCo) sold its entire 15% stake in the company for $9.50 to $9.75 a share. AIMCo is a Crown corporation that manages Alberta’s public-sector pension plans and other special funds. Precision ran into trouble in 2009, because the credit crisis hurt its ability to refinance short-term loans it needed to buy U.S.-based contract driller Grey Wolf Inc. That’s when AIMCo purchased notes and shares in Precision....
ENBRIDGE INC., $43.71, Toronto symbol ENB, announced this week that U.S.-based Marathon Petroleum Corp. (New York symbol MPC) will invest in its proposed Sandpiper pipeline, which would pump oil from North Dakota’s Bakken shale formation to U.S. refineries. Under the deal, Marathon will cover $975 million (37.5%) of Sandpiper’s $2.6-billion cost. In exchange, Marathon will get a 27% stake in Enbridge’s North Dakota pipeline system. Enbridge’s share of Sandpiper’s cost is $1.625 billion. That’s equal to 1.5 times the $1.1 billion, or $1.33 a share, that it earned in the nine months ended September 30, 2013....

On August 20, 2012, CGI completed its $2.7-billion purchase of Logica plc, a U.K.-based firm that offers computer outsourcing services in 36 countries....
Many investors look at real estate investment trusts (REITs) as proxies for bonds. Instead, we view REITs as companies that own and manage real estate.

When you invest in a REIT, the most important thing to look at is the quality of its holdings. This includes locations, tenants and expansion opportunities....
ENCANA CORP. $18 (Toronto symbol ECA; Conservative Growth Portfolio, Resources sector; Shares outstanding: 740.1 million; Market cap: $13.3 billion; Price-to-sales ratio: 2.2; Dividend yield: 1.6%; TSINetwork Rating: Average; www.encana.com) is cutting its reliance on natural gas, as rising shale gas production has cut prices from $11.50 U.S....
Oil prices have soared from around $18 U.S. a barrel in 1993 to around $100 U.S. today. However, new drilling technologies have made it easier to extract oil from hard-to-reach deposits, such as oil sands and shale rock formations. Rising production from these sources could hurt oil prices in the same way the shale gas boom has depressed natural gas prices (see Encana on Page 111).

Even so, these three oil producers continue to expand their oil sands operations....
