Deltic Timber, $61.56, symbol DEL on New York (Shares outstanding: 12.7 million; Market cap: $792.8 million; www.deltic.com), produces lumber from its 453,200 acres of timberland, mainly in Arkansas and north Louisiana. The company mainly grows southern pine on these properties, which is known in the industry as a type of softwood. Deltic’s two sawmills, located in the Arkansas towns of Ola and Waldo, mainly sell their lumber to wholesale distributors, lumber treaters, large retailers and industrial clients in the midwestern and southern U.S. The company’s lumber is mainly used in residential construction, roof trusses, remanufactured products and laminated beams. In the three months ended June 30, 2013, Deltic’s revenue rose 43.5%, to $53.2 million from $37.1 million a year earlier. Earnings jumped to $11.3 million, or $0.89 a share, from $4.5 million, or $0.28.
