Between Hurricane Sandy and next Tuesday’s U.S. presidential election, there’s not much to say right now about the market. The storm is a passing affair. It’s a tragedy for everybody in its path, and it will cause many deaths and great property destruction. But a year from now, it won’t matter all that much to the North American market or the economy, regardless of whether it lasts another day or another week. The presidential election is different. The two sides have a wide gap in the roles they see for government. The election outcome will have an impact on economic growth, inflation, interest rates and joblessness for at least the next four years, and possibly longer. Regardless of who wins the election, I expect to see an easing of investor and business uncertainty in the next few weeks.
