United Parcel Service, $73.16, symbol UPS on New York (Shares outstanding: 726.8 million; Market cap: $53.2 billion; www.ups.com), is the world’s largest air and ground courier. Atlanta-based UPS also provides specialized transportation and logistics services. It operates throughout the U.S. and in over 200 other countries and territories. In the three months ended September 30, 2012, UPS’s revenue fell slightly, to $13.07 billion from $13.17 billion a year earlier. Earnings per share before one-time items fell 2.7%, to $1.07 from $1.10. UPS is seeing steady demand in North America and most international markets, but that was offset by lower exports from Asia and unfavorable currency fluctuations. The company aims to keep growing by acquisition; it is now in the process of making its largest purchase to date: TNT Express, one of the largest European couriers, for $6.8 billion.
